I hope the subject drew you in, but the idea will make you post.

I hate saying I can't understand or don't make sense. I was walking
this morning and I was thinking about various things. I thought of
something that made me think, "well, I can't have my cake and eat it
too, I guess". Then I thought, "what the hell, why can't I eat the cake
if I have it?".

So, if you can think of any of these stupid sayings that don't seem to
make much sense, please feel free to share them. Also, if you can
explain the logic behind having your cake and not being able to eat it,
please proceed. That saying is totally non-sensicle to me and I have
used it a million times and never thought of how dumb it was.

it really doesn't make any sense but it is supposed to signify that you
can't always have it both ways, sometimes you have to make a decision
and do without one or the other.
i understand that you have an open relationship but the traditional
definition of a relationship is based on monogamy so you would not be
able to have your cake and eat it too.

meaning no woman besides the one you are in a relationship with. we all
know that there are couples who prefer an open relationship so it would
not apply to them in this specific instance, enjoy your cake lol

I find it funny and a bit warming that you got the "open-marriage" thing
from my comments. I mean, in this short time you have gotten to know me
quite well - as that was where my brain was when I thought of that
sayings - BUT

Even with you description I still the the saying falls short of logic.
If you have your cake you should be able to eat. I know when ever I've
had a cake, I've always been able to eat it too. - AND

I still am curious if anyone can think of other silly or seemingly out
of place sayings. I can think of a few that are just real old that
still get used even though the things they refer to are no longer
relevant.

I'm gonna eat it since I have it...na-na-na-na-boo-boo!

See the whole thing about having your cake and eating it too depends on
how you define "having." To have your cake means for it to be in front
of you and you can see it, touch it, poke it, w/e. And if you eat the
cake, then you no longer have it in that way, granted you still have it
in your stomach, but you can't see it or keep it.

That's how it got explained to me, hopefully it makes sense to you too.

Thanks Amy. That does make some sense. It does seem the saying falls
short of being specific enough - and we learn to take for granted what
it means. I have always understood what it meant, but when I disected
the words it seems weak. But if what you said is the intent, I can see
what is "meant".

how bout the pot calling the kettle black.

Is that the right saying? I think so, I think my grandmother used to say
it...but that was a FEW years ago...

well with the one in the hand two in the bush is supposed to be an
analagy for be grateful for what you got cause you might not catch
either of the birds in the bush
and the pot calling the kettle black i believe comes from when all
cooking pans came in one color black you know like people in glass
houses shouldnt throw stones\or dont count your chickens before they
hatch

my favorite was its cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey
wich comes from 17th and 18th centery it was meant to describe the tool
the used to hold conon balls on ships docks it was like a large pool
rack made of brass and the called it a brassmonkey and when it would get
cold the monkey would shrink causing the balls to fall off of the stack.

you can't have yer cake and eat it too...I think(and this is just a
guess) it came from the French Revolution when Marie Antoinette said,
"Let then eat cake". A great many of the population was half starved,
and if you've been starved, eating something like cake or something
really sweet can be detrimental to your health
