1)Oncologist: A physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Unless you had a TUMA... I highly doubt you've seen an Oncologist... Perhaps An orthopedic doctor/surgeon?

2)"Treating yourself" at the gym is not wise... All the reasons blatantly apparent

I'm not going to question your diagnostic capabilities but how do you even know you had a fracture? cause it hurt? What kind of fracture was it? comminuted fracture(crushed bone)? greenstick?
any cartilage damage? tendons? Get my point?

You're lucky gangrene didn't set in and have to lop off your arm

Welcome to the party. Ooops I misspoke, seems everyone is so hung up on semantics these days. Yes you are right, it probably was an ortho-pedist, not an onco, so I apologize. Now John, I had a similar injury about 5 years ago, and Dr. Ortho was a punk, and he did nothing for me, and told me nothing I didn't already know. The body heals itself. It's not the 24th century and Dr. Beverly Crusher can't wave an instrument over the injury and magically make it heal. Would be nice if that were true, but we have to wait a few hundred years. Now something that is very real, sports injuries. Football, basketball, players have to deal with injuries all the time, and they have the additional pressure of how long until they get to play again? How long? Do you immobilize it, or do you work it out?

What??? A party without cheese dip???

I think it's important to remain accurate in posts... spelling and the content... If nothing else, perhaps someone reading this thread learned something today and it was in no way a jab at you.

That being said, Not all Docs are punks... to generalize is putting your life in danger... It's all fun & games till someone loses an arm right? You asked a question "how long" for a reason... perhaps you are starting to feel something ain't right? I was merely asking pertinent questions about the type of injury you had. You mentioned athletes and them having to deal with injuries... Dude? I dunno if you've noticed but you're older and maybe nowhere as fit as a 20-25yr old? Trust me it has loads to do with it!

4-6 weeks for a broken bone by NHL standards... funny enough they have a team of quacks at their disposal... and hyperbaric systems to boot!

Sorry I must get back to my patients LOL

That's all I was askin', how long. I realize it takes longer to heal for a 40 something than it does a 20 something. But dammitt it hurts, when will the pain end?

Did some dirt biking in my younger years.

four to six weeks if no complications and you are fairly healthy and don't smoke.

It also depends on the type of fracture. Just cracked, or broken right in half and sticking through the skin.

When the pain will go away also depends on how bad the break is and what you consider pain.

My kid snapped both arm bones just above the wrist. They didn't go through the skin but his arm was L shaped so it had to be set in the ER. (Off topic but "conscious sedation" sucks for setting bones!) Anyways, he had it in a soft brace for a few days so the swelling could go down, then got the cast which he had for 8 wks. After removal, he had to wear a brace for about 4 wks during the day, but only because he's a boneheaded teenager and enjoys activities that result in broken bones. He did say it still hurt though during that time, so I'd give it another month or so. And as suggested, try to at least immobilize it for awhile, so that you can't turn it the way that causes pain, before you try to start building strength back. Good luck.flowerforyou

I've only broken an ankle. And a toe, I think, though I never went to the doctor for that one. Just snapped it back straight and duct taped it to the adjacent toe for a few days. All better!

I fractured my skull in 3 places, broke my wrist. They put a cast on the wrist. Get a splint, yes it should be immobilized and get one of those therapy balls and use it to build up your arm again.

I broke my shoulder when I was 12 and I seem to remember it taking 12 weeks to heal. But, that was a long time ago so my memory of it is not that clear.

At my age I have been very lucky, never had a broken bone but dislocated my shoulder once in a fall... however I have had 6 surgerys for gall bladder, appendix, carpal tunnel, lower back, blown achilles and torn cartlidge in my knee... You should at least have an xray on your arm so it heals properly or you will have problems a long time down the road...

6 to 8 weeks, plus other time is what I've head. Fortunate in never breaking anything, even with the falls off horses.

However, I still have muscle pain and twinges where the doc cut through those muscles for heart surgery and that's been 3 years. The muscle is healed, though still sore and tender. Doc said it may be years, and it may exist as a phantom pain.

keep a eye on it, it may be scar tissue causing the pain.

I hear that alot. However, the last time I had a broken bone before this one was my cycling accident in '05. I went to the hospital, and saw the ortho, he took some pictures and said "Yep, your radial bone is impacted, and you have a fracture in your right thumb." Gee, thanks doc. He gave me a prescrip for 30 days of vicadin, and that was it. I figured this time, after learning what happened last time, I could take care of it myself. And I have, I just forgot how long these injuries take to completely heal.

6-10 wks.
Pain may or may not persist.

Time and Nature are the great healers.

A guy came into the OR Fri. night.....open femur fracture.

That guy is going to hurt for a long time.
Snowmobile vs. tree.

Tree always wins.

(Toes, ribs, skull)
