One arrested in Marianna double homicide

Staff reports MARIANNA — A suspect in the recent double murder in Marianna has turned himself in and has been charged with two counts of murder, according to the Marianna Police Department.
LaMarquis Dewayne Powell submitted himself to questioning after learning he had a warrant for his arrest in reference to the shooting that happened Friday at 3070 Carters Mill Road in Marianna. After being questioned Powell was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance. The Marianna Police Department reports that on Friday, Feb. 18 witnesses said that two African-American men entered the apartment of Christopher Daniel Odom, 36, 3070 Carters Mill Rd. Apt H-12, at the Marianna Garden Apartments. Witnesses said the suspects entered Odom’s apartment with the apparent intent to commit a robbery. The two men resisted and were shot during the ensuing struggle. Police responded later at 10:37 p.m. to reports of shooting and found Odom dead at the scene. Another victim, 36 year-old Michael L. Smith of 2665 Rail Road Street Cottondale, FL, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he later died. The investigation is still ongoing and progress has been made toward identifying additional suspects.
