Interesting movie I just saw with an interesting plot and outcome.

Eli, played by Denzel Washington is a wonderer in post apocalyptic world of burnt out cars and towns. After the "flash" (nuclear war) the people leftover blamed religion and the bible for the downfall of humankind so they burned all the bibles but Eli had a copy and he heard an inner voice telling him to take the last bible and head west.

Along the way he meets scavengers that he has to fight to retain his bible and he ends up in a town that has a leader that wants the book. The leader wants it to control the people.

He fights his way out and heads west again but the bad guys follow.

The bad guys catch up with him and take the bible but Eli continues on and ends up in San Francisco where he encounters a group that had taken over Alcatraz Island to rebuild civilization.

The outcome was that the town leader who had retrieved the bible discovers that it's written in braille and the only blind person in town refused to translate it....shortly after the towns people revolted and overthrew him.

Meanwhile Eli (who was wounded) recalled and had the island people write down the bible word for word, then he died. The leader of the island was very interested in the writings only since it was a book they did not have...so he printed it and....just put is on a shelf among the other books.

The overall message was that many blamed the King James bible for the destruction of civiliation but this time the bible was put in it's place...along side other books that were JUST books.

Great movie.

There's no such thing as JUST a book. But, that's another thread. Sounds like a good movie.

Well cookbooks...lol.

Well we were late for Shutter Island so we took this one in. It started like a Roadwarrior spinoff and I moaned but as it unfolded I became very interested.

One of Denzel's best acting jobs to make this movie work. Tom Waits, Gary Oldman, Jennifer Beals are also in it as well as the Alcatraz Island leader being portrayed by Clockwork Orange fame Malcolm McDowell.

Here's a trailer:

Sounds interesting, Middle. I've kinda been wanting to see it, but not sure if it was overly religious.

it wasnt any more religious than a john wayne movie really, just happened that the treasure involved HAPPENED to be a bible, but the plot was very western like in my opinion,,,well done.

Well if someone prefers death, destruction, starvation, and murder over peace, salvation and every lasting life then I suppose burning the bible and putting on a shelf makes perfect sense.I haven't seen the movie but sounds like what the earth would be like after Armageddon.Assuming all the Christians left(and everyone would notice they left because hundreds of millions of people are gone)I can only imagine the people left there in that miserable wasteland would spend every minute they had searching for a bible.I'm sure they would kill and give everything they had for just a glimpse of it.It would soon be the most valuable object in the world and the only ticket off this planet.

that was actually another interesting element to the plot. In the post apocolyptic world, most the population was fairly young and didnt really even know about all the things we take for granted now. Many had not learned to even read and Instead of making purchases with money, people had gone back to bartering. BOOKS (like in other historical cultures) were actually a valuable commodity. The head honcho was desperate to find the bible so he could misuse it to oppress others.
