Just found out I'm going there for 5 weeks. While my weekends are going to be free. I was wondering if I can get some advice. What are the best things to do there. I'll be in South Hampton to be exact.

the night life is quite good, theres a multiplex type thinga ma jiggy where you can get pissed and go bowling.
but im guessing you want to sample the culture, so get a hooded jumper, a knife and a nasty dog. stand in the street drinking meths and just try to intimidate the locals. or alternativly, visit things to do in southhampton.co.uk www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g186299-Activities-Southampton_Hampshire_England.html |

I sent ya a message with my recommendations, but I thought I'd reiterate the core message:
PUBS! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinking, supper. These little havens of English-ness are providers of all! Get yourself to a decent rustic pub and get some real ale down ya - steer clear of Fosters, Carling, Peroni and all those cruddy lagers and go for the local brews - you'll be pleasantly surprised. Hell, I might even be visiting family and be able to stop by for a pint. Mostly, though, get thee to a pub! |

Pubs are great. Pub food is pretty good. Lots of historical stuff if you are interested in that kind of thing. You can make friends in the pubs quickly.

Lived there for years. Best advice is the Pub life ...
AND!!! ... Get on the trains at weekends, and out of England, and see (!!!): Devon Cornwall ... The Coast! Scotland ... esp the HighLands - I forget when the Edinborough Festival occurs, but it is not to be missed if it happens while you are on the Isle! All the wee Scottish Isles are past intoxicating also. Scotland is the farthermost, though. Wales ... to a lesser extent for me, though it is some folk's fav. |

Also, get to Ashford in Kent and take the quick tunnel train under the Channel Sea to France!
Also ... QUICK Hovercraft to Amsterdam is a BRILL weekend ...

Hey, Dancere's talking sense!
Scotland might be a bit far (Fort William = outdoors capital of Britian, though it's about 15 hours on the train from Southampton). But I really, really, wouldn't shun Wales. If you're into hiking or walking at all, fer christ's sake give me a shout and I'll run a trip over to Snowdonia (My favourite hill in all Britain is Tryffan) - plus there's Snowdon, the Rhinogs, the Glyders, and about 2 dozen other great hills. Then you've got the coast all along that way. There's even the Ffestiniog steam railway and the hollow mountain. I've not even mentioned the castles! North Wales is awesome. Lake district is also somewhat of the awesome variety. Good hills include Helwellyn, Scarfell Pike, The Old Man of Coniston and that's again a tiny, tiny sample. You've also got the lakes - Coniston, Keswick, Windermere. It's a fantastic part of the world :) This goes for anyone by the way - if you fancy hitting the hills for a day or two's walking but lack someone to go with, give me a shout! |

Wales didn't rock, as I hadn't you as tour guide! Locals rule!!! And, honestly, I barely got there in all factualness! Yeah, love the Lake District as well ... And ALL the Moors! Perhaps the most other~worldy, mood inducing parts of the Celtic Realms are those majestic Moors? *sigh of longing* Yeah, BIG fan of allllllllllllllll that's been mentioned.
