Positive replacement therapy.
When I quit smoking cigarettes I started exercising a lot more. For me, skateboarding was a great contributor to my success in quitting - but any activity will help.

Exercise releases endorphins. Natural high. Helps with the cravings.

cold turkey...preferably starting off a new day instead of trying to quit halfway through the day. tried it a few times but didn't have the proper willpower to stay off. might try one of those electronic cigarettes next time. i hear they're pretty effective.

A friend of mine quit with sunflower seeds. Thought I might try that or order those e-cigs

I quit cold turkey 4 years ago because I couldn't breath anymore. When the craving got to be too much I would smoke a couple hits of a small cigar, like a swisher sweet and it was enough to keep me from buying a pack of cigarettes. Some 420 helps too biggrin

I was in college and had been smoking for a couple of years. I met this really great chick and we went out for dinner. After dinner, I pulled out a pack of cigs and asked "Do you mind if I smoke?". She said "Yes I do." I said "OK, I'll never smoke again". I threw the pack down and haven't smoked since.

It was amazing. After a couple of weeks, I started to breath easier, had more energy, could taste food much better, got fewer colds, and didn't smell like cigarettes. While I was going through the "drug addiction withdrawal" I had her to remind me what a good deal I had made.

I quit over 20 years ago. It actually wasn't that hard. You just need good timing. I waited until I caught a cold and then stopped cold turkey because every time I tried to light up it tasted like chalk. After around 3 weeks goes by you'll get some cravings as the nicotine leaves your body, but after that it's easy and now I don't ever even think about it anymore...

...best decision you could make.

3 months now and I had to quit because I couldn't afford it. Lost my job in October and it was either food or cigs.

It's weird because it wasn't that bad and it was thru one of the worst times of my life....I knew I couldn't go out and just buy a pack...so I took long winter walks with my dog...worked out, started running and then got busy with school.

The cravings still hit me from time to time...but they've become easier to work through.

My dad quit 30 yrs ago...he tells me that he still gets a craving from time to time and he knows that if he took up one...he would prolly get sick...but if he picked up a second...he'd be addicted again.

hmm

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about, i mean i just quit. It was easy, i toook a toke, then another, and put it out. Followed by a stern "I quit."

(picks up another cig. sparks it) toke toke...ok quit again.

I should write a book!

mind over matter

and wanting to get pregnant

i didn't want to be a pregnant smoker and i didn't know how difficult a time i'd have quitting, so i started practising about a year prior to getting married and trying to conceive.

it was the easiest thing, and i never had one serious craving. i guess there was something more powerful pulling me than the actual addiction.

besides, i don't think i was as much physically addicted as i weas a routine smoker, so i changed certain things i did, at least temporarily

i also had 2 lists i'd read often enough. one was a pretty lengthy list of all the carcinogenic material in a cigarette, the other was the positive change in your body over a certain period, even hours, so that there was something positive to keep you going.

try by force of will to make it one day. stay busy and away from anyone who smokes. very busy. do whatever it takes.

if you can make it one day, then commit to go one more day. the
first 3 days are the hardest.

if you can make it 2 then you don't wanna backslide. go for 3.

after 3 days there was a much reducced chemical need at least for me.
then i would try for a week as my goal.

after a week you should be able to go months or permanently.
but you really have to want it. it was the hardest thing i had
done up to that point in my life. it often takes several tries
to get those first 3 days.

Yes! and also YES to the mind over matter comment. You have to truely want to quit.

I smoked a pack & 1/2 a day for 30 some years. 3 yrs ago I watched my mum die of lung cancer. I quit that day in the hospital that she told us she was dying. Only to start again about 3 months later...except that I hid it from my children. It took me another year of lying, coughing, stinking, wasting money & increasing my chances of dying that horrble way in which my kids had to witness of their grandmother passing.
I put them down cold turkey.I got busy keeping my mind off them and now I have'nt had a cigarette in over a year. You really have to reprogram your brain because thats where the addiction is. Good luck!

What worked for you?

Caught a cold... and every time I tried to light up it was like I was sucking on a piece of chalk, so I stopped cold turkey. One of the best things I've ever done

Good for you man. I started this thread but still haven't given it a go on trying to quit. Some good tips here though when I do

I know it's horribly bad for you, makes you stink, and if I continue smoking I'll probably cut some years off my life; I realize that. It's difficult for me cause I do enjoy it

I loved it too. It was my fav. That's what makes quitting so hard.

I've attempted quiting so many times...I never went more than a few days. Stress was always my trigger. I'm using an electric cigarette right now..and I feel like I have something to look forward to once I quit, never felt that before.
