Actually, its due to the location of countries.
When you live in countries that are so close together.
You tend to learn the language and such. That, the USA has been a little isolated and has disdained learning languages. I have heard stories of my grandfather getting smacked hard for not speaking English at the dinner table....

the thing i see is there are alot of other countries where the children/adults speak english and other languages,but they are still living in poverty or just making ends meat....so don't let that fool ya. i'm not saying our education system is the best here in america, but what you see on TV doesn't mean they are living the good life,why do you think they come here...for a better life,maybe thats why english is taught in other countries.

And it came across the local news today that Gov. Perry refused to take 700 million dollars to help with the Texas education system, because he essentially doesn't want US history taught by the federal government. Rolls eyes...

And we wonder why Texas is so far behind in the educational scheme of things... Gah!

Government red tape, the culture of being taken care of financially by a social security system from the cradle to the grave means we don't have to leave the confines of our own English speaking environment to seek work in another country thereby running into another language being spoken on a day to day basis.

Teachers are not allowed to encourage children to think outside the box because they have to stick to a 'one method fits all' curriculum, parents who do not instill or encourage upon their children the joy of learning an the enthusiasm of exploring; we set our children up for a fall by wrapping them in cotton wool.Motivation, extreme arrogance and basically poor teaching methods all adds to the poor performance of us not excelling in the learning of other languages.

The British have the misguided concept that if we go to a foreign country for a holiday the locals should speak 'our' language...... After all, English is an internatinal language, we don't need to speak theirs. Polyglottery is not encouraged in the British curriculum or social culture, the smattering of school days French, German and Spanish remains right were it started.......... In the classroom.

and in posing the question...I was so arrogant to think that only Americans are arrogant.......I'm sure the British know nothing of arrogancelaugh

However I did assume that the "curriculum" was similar in ALL European countries. My bad (pardon the slang), my ignorance.

Perhaps arrogance and feeling of entitlement is a detriment to "true learning". "Ya think" - pun intended.

I dont think its just that. As I said, those countries are as close to each other as our states are to each other, they regularly are hearing and speaking other languages because of proximity.

It's even worse. Any idea how many languages are spoken in Switzerland alone? Look it up and you will be surprised.

Every US-citizen should be grateful to live in such a great beautiful nation where English is common. Makes it a lot easier.

And furthermore: do you really think that most people in Europe speak several languages fluently? C'mon!

This post makes me think of the poster that says loosley that we learn everything we really need to know in Kindergarten.

That the rest is just fine tuneing to stick us into a very limited mold often to our detriment of being a free thinking person.

I think the British invented the condition of arrogance, take a look at the patriotic song 'Rule Britania'

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

When Britain first, at heaven's command,
Arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter of the land,
And Guardian Angels sang this strain:

The nations not so blest as thee
Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish great and free:
The dread and envy of them all.

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke,
As the loud blast that tears the skies
Serves but to root thy native oak.

Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame;
All their attempts to bend thee down
Will but arouse thy generous flame,
But work their woe and thy renown.

To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles, thine.

The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coasts repair.
Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

Now if that isn't arrogance on a grand scale......
laugh

But for a fairly long time they did rule the waves and a fair amount of the world. So it may have been arrogance, but it was legit then.

The US has that same arrogance by expecting everyone to kow-tow to them. And Britain is still our buddy, so they get to keep their arrogance through the US.

Therin laid the foundation of arrogance, never in their wildest dreams did they envisage that their colonies would rise up and fight back or ask for independence, the days of the Raj and the Battle of Isandlwana speaks volumes.
