Obama unveils $250 million math, science program
Posted: January 6th, 2010 02:13 PM ET Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama announced Wednesday a $250 million public-private initiative designed to improve national math and science education. Specifically, the money will be used to promote five new partnerships intended to help train over 10,000 new math and science teachers over the next five years. It will also be used to support the professional development of more than 100,000 current math, science, technology and engineering teachers, according to the White House. The new funding builds on Obama's math and science "Educate to Innovate Campaign," which was announced last November. Several large companies, including Intel, Xerox, Kodak and Time Warner Cable have already pledged $260 million to the effort. American students, Obama noted, currently rank 21st in science and 25th in math compared with students around the world, putting the United States at a disadvantage on vital issues such as medicine, energy and security. The administration, Obama said Wednesday, is committed to moving the United States "from the middle to the top of the pack." The president handed out awards to over 100 math and science teachers after making the announcement. Last year, Obama unveiled a $4.35 billion "Race to the Top" fund to offer competitive grants to states pursuing creative strategies for recruiting, training and retaining teachers. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/01/06/obama-unveils-250-million-math-science-program/ |

It's not enough.
And quite a small amount if he signs away billions for useless wars. |

I'm kinda being pulled both ways on this.
Whatt grade students will be tought by these teachers, are they going to be in the inner city High School, college, elementary schools? I think a bigger emphasis should be put on the families of inner city kids and their schools. |

Hope they don't waste the money on students who have to be graded on a curve or are taken from a inferior student pool . lower grades than others .

Good thing I'm not either one....lol Please forgive me for thinking that the logic of someone who can't add setting up a " progressive " math program is a bit ludicrous. I keep forgetting that the Libs aren't good at logic. |

Gee, don't let the story's info get in the way of T-bag truthiness...plus our tax monies already go towards education plus is education not important for Americans to help compete in the global economy? You want America to be left behind? |

Like I said before. I don't think giving money to further educate teachers is going to help. The problem with our education system is with the students. We need programs that make the kids want to learn not go to school because they have to. If you ask me the majority of the problems are in the homes of the students and I think that is where we need to start to fix the problem. |

Just look at you for example with your hat on crooked and a Green Bay shirt. Quite the role model for the kids. (jk) GO CARDINALS!! |

I keep forgetting that the Libs aren't good at logic. Well, actually, even if he couldnt add, which being a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard is very doubtful, that would have nothing to do with him sending forth such an initiative. By that logic, only military vets should run for president as only they have the experience in war. By that logic, no president who isnt an environmental engineer should concern themselves with the environmental issues,,,,,,see where I am going with this. The President does not act alone, like most business owners in large businesses, he has access to professionals and 'consultants 'in many fields. |

Yay for improving national math and science education. LOL, after reading some of the posts against it it reminded me of the 1932 Horse Feather's song by Groucho Marx - "I'm Against It". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq4eeyVr_Hs "I don’t know what they have to say, It makes no difference anyway -- Whatever it is, I’m against it! No matter what it is or who commenced it, I’m against it. Your proposition may be good But let’s have one thing understood -- Whatever it is, I’m against it! And even when you’ve changed it or condensed it, I’m against it. I’m opposed to it -- On general principles I’m opposed to it! Chorus: He’s opposed to it! In fact, in word, in deed, He’s opposed to it! For months before my son was born, I used to yell from night till morn, Whatever it is, I’m against it! And I’ve kept yelling since I commenced it, I’m against it!" The RW T-baggery are against any progress that might make things better, their agenda of "make the other guy fail" (while having no plans of their own) is beyond absurd. Now is not the time to play politics when things have devolved so far under the Dippic... |

$250 million?
thats it? thats almost an insult for as long as the kids are more concerned with playstations and blackberrys and feel entitled to the things their parents had to work their azzes off for, for as long as the teacher unions view schoolchildren as life support and retirement programs, for as long as "diversity training" is more important than arts and science and music our education system will suck and kids who really want to learn will be better off in private schools or home school |

Another great thread and cheers to the President and his cabinet for getting something moving in education. I hope he expands these efforts to all the disciplines, including the specials. The real reason teachers don't want to teach, is because they are not highly valued in this country. Low pay, too many students, not enough resources, btchy parents, did I say low pay? It's not that teachers need more training, they need more time, space, resources and support in which to operate. Good Job Groucho.
