so my next question would be....if we limit flights from countries that don't have our guidelines or ones comparable to them...how will that effect us?

in other words....flights like these can come here without our screening guidelines?

Do we have the authority to enforce rules in other countries?

No, but we can refuse them service to US Airports if they don't enforce them.

that is basically what I was asking. Why should we bring possible danger here?

Where does the buck stop?
Homeland Security should have realized what security measures were in place at an International hub with flights coming to the US.
Neapolitan's head should roll.

It was her job to review the agency she inherited. If things weren't done by the previous Admin she should have been fixing them.

ok Fanta...now I'm confused. Isn't homeland security just for here? so how do we use homeland security in other countries?

LOL
You are confused.

Ask your self, what is Homeland Security's function?

ok question...how do these guidelines pertain to other countries? Aren't these guidelines just for the US?

Ah, and that's where Homeland comes in. What if the terrorist was on board an EgyptAir flight, or Qantas to the U.S.? Do we do nothing because the flight was not an American airline or American city? If it is a possible threat to us, then we have every right to intervene.

I wonder if Obama is going to have the guts to call this a act of terrorism or just brush it off as someone who was mentally disturbed.Of course I am not going to be surprised if they don't mention Islam or his religious background.

Not sure we really need a trial on this guy.He was caught trying to blow up explosives taped to his body on a airplane in the air.He should go from jail straight to the gas chamber on the same day.

why didnt the state dep. revoke his passport? if they had just done that none of this would have happened. as for the security failure that part is fully on the europeans after all the plane left from an airport in europe and there is no TSA there. unfotenately there is no known way to effectivly defeat this threat. they used almost exactly the same device to attack that saudi offical back in aug. he survived only because he got luckey. the posibility also exists that we just figured out what happened to airfrance 447 on june 1. i hate to say this but i have to advise against flying at least untill we know more about this threat. another posible target for this type of attack is federal courthouses because they use meddal dectors as their primary line of defence. nowhere is safe untill an effective counter mesure is developed!

i almost forgot the israeli defence wall is also useless now because if they can get on a plane with this device than they can get passed an israeli checkpoint.

"Key security agencies lack permanent leaders
White House only recently nominated candidates for two federal agencies"

The Fat;

“The president doesn't think we should play politics with issues like these. He hasn't. His response has been fact-based and appropriate and will continue to be as such,” said deputy White House press secretary Bill Burton.

But other Democrats say the GOP’s yuletide political offensive could backfire on Republicans, putting the spotlight on the party’s own less-than-spotless record on homeland security.

Exhibit A: DeMint’s controversial “hold” on Obama’s choice to lead the Transportation Safety Administration, Erroll Southers, which has left the agency leaderless during a critical period of reappraisal and potential reorganization.

And,

Over the summer, 108 House Republicans voted against the final conference report of the 2010 appropriation bill for the Department of Homeland Security, which included funding for explosives detection systems and other aviation security measures.

The no voters cited a procedural dispute over the appropriations process. They included Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), Hoekstra and a who’s who of big-name House Republicans: Reps. Mike Pence, Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Joe Wilson (R-SC).

The conference bill included more than $4 billion for "screening operations," including $1.1 billion in funding for explosives detection systems, with $778 million intended for buying and installing the systems.
