I resolve to keep that.

Couldn't agree more. You don't need a date on a calendar. If you want to quit something, just do it. If you want to start doing something, just do it, whenever you are ready.

The origin

The New Year's Resolution tradition dates back to the early Babylonians, whose most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment. In Judaism's holiest holiday, Yom Kippur, one reflects upon his/her wrongdoings and seeks and offers forgiveness. The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon and achieve self-improvement annually.

I am too stubborn to break a promise but if I did I'd have to resolve to not be so stubborn.

res⋅o⋅lu⋅tion  /ˌrɛzəˈluʃən/ [rez-uh-loo-shuhn]:

2. a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something.
3. the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc.
4. the mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; firmness of purpose.
5. the act or process of resolving or separating into constituent or elementary parts.

8. a solution, accommodation, or settling of a problem, controversy, etc.

These seem to apply. A solution to an existing problem, not a promise. Now I'm pretty sure all of us have at least one problem they would like to resolve. In that case, for me, it's to find a date and perhaps a girlfriend if it goes well.

You let me off way to easy madam.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.
