Curious double standard about makeup, especially when it comes to men. On tv or as a movie actor or theater, it is just fine for a man to wear makeup, but in public and mainstream life, any man who wears makeup would be seen as transvestite, homosexual, or effeminate. Another fine example of "either it's all okay or none of it is." Having done a bit of theater, I can actually explain this one. The reason that people ( in the case you are speaking of, men ) wear makeup is simply because, if they didn't, their eyes would look exceptionally dark and there would be various other shadows because of the lighting. Makeup is used to soften those shadows and to make sure that the correct facial features stand out. If it wasn't used, the guys you see on stage would have faces that looked like skulls rather than faces. JustaGuy, I had a girlfriend once that used to refer to it as "Fakeup." In a way it is, it allows us to effectively put on a mask and be someone we want to be, even though it's just paints and oils. I think either it's what society expects, or that there is a private enjoyment of persuading people that we are more attractive than we truly are. Yes, there is love at first glance, but some of us are a little more skeptical and love the person for who they are, not what they look like. Beauty is only skin deep as they say. I agree with you. But you asked why it's ok for men to wear makeup for theater performances and not in public. I simply answered as to why there is a " double standard ". In actuality, there really isn't one concerning that particular combination. In theater it's a necessity. :-) |

I was however commenting on an observation I've made. Whether it be a newsanchor, a theater actor, or even a musician, makeup is very necessary, and lighting is usually the reason why. I agree. |

Guys probably shouldnt wear makeup and girls probably shouldnt wear crew cuts.. it happens, but its always gonna get a second look. The culture determines what is feminine and what is masculine. We can be equal(men and women) without ignoring that we are actually different.

Honestly, I dig it when a chick bothers to make her self as beautiful as possible for me.....(it either means she is vain or wants to look good for me) but, at least she is trying.
Yes, woman can look good without make up......but, don't kid yourself into thinking EVERY woman looks good without it. Hell, I groom as much as I can to look nice for any bird I am going out with. IF it was socially acceptable, I would probably do make up if it meant I could look better for my gal without me being called a fag. But, it is what it is. I have gone out with women who are gorgeous Au naturale.....and are freaking GODDESSES when they are made up to kill. I love walking into a place where every head turns ....every man thinks "DAMN!!!!!" and every woman thinks...."B*tch!" |

Im not a big wearer of make up, but i do use some cos i feel a bit more confident with it on. Thats not necessarily right, but its a fact. Prob didnt help that the father of my kids used to tell me i was better looking as a "finished article". Its amazing how much impact a few words can have on ur long term confidence. |

I haven't worn make-up since high school and I don't ever plan to do it again. This is me....take it or leave it. I used to think that I needed to impress people with the way that I look. I finally realized that I don't need to do that but instead be confident in myself and who I am.
