i've been a vegetarian for over twenty years. i don't try and push my beliefs on others; i don't lecture or try and make people uncomfortable...funny thing is, they certainly do it to me.

it's almost like the average meat-eater takes it as a personal slam that i don't eat meat. would i rather you didn't eat it? yeah...but i'm not bringing it up, and i'm not shoving it in your face, either.

i live what i believe. i do not wear leather, and i do not consume any product from slaughter. ever. i do not waver from one day to the next...i do not have the occasional bite of meat...i'm not wishy-washy...

later, through tons of doctor visits with my little one, i found out that meat proteins cause inflammation and hasten the breakdown of collagen in our bodies. as ours is defective, we couldn't eat meat even if we wanted to.

you forgot the vegetarians that wear leather, leather furniture, purses, car seats and so on!

To them, we should just kill them, take their skin and leave the dead rotting carcass on the grounddevil laugh

First of all that is Vegan..those who will not eat or use any animal by products..not vegetarian. There is a difference, a big difference.

I am a vegetarian. I feel and look better from this choice. I use to eat meat, I felt lethargic, and bloated after a steak, or a pork chop..
I eat eggs, I eat cheese, actually really enjoy good cheese. My boys eat meat and I buy it for them. I just choose not to eat it.

Back off the vegetarians, especially if you don't even have your facts correct..vegetarians are people too. grumble

Your correct in your observation...I have a friend in Montana that has a meat shop, they make buffalo jerky, have a truck they take right out on the field and slaughter and cut up steak. I have know them for over 20 years and yes, they were quite offended when I stopped eating meat.
I reminded that it's "not like I was buying my meat from you...what does it matter." Still...they ask why, still they don't understand why I attempt to explain my choice..seems rather silly.

I am not a vegetarian, but only because I do eat chicken, beef, pork. But what is funny to me is when I go out to eat, and I order a vegetable plate. I sometimes just want that, and it never fails. I order, I either get looks or am asked, "Are you a Vegetarian?" shocked scared

It's like vegetarians have cooties or something.slaphead

I just think its because people are not used to seeing vegetarians (knowingly). It is much more the average to eat more of a selection of foods.I think if the average person were vegetarians, omnivores would be getting the same reaction.

Yeah, kind of silly to try to sell people on what YOU want to eat. I say eat what you want for whatever reasons you want. Live well and be happy. Vegetarians can be healthy or unhealthy like any other person. Just chose what works for YOUR body and your palate and let others be happy.

Dont ya just hate those people that want to tell you all the doom and gloom stories about anything you chose to put into your mouth..lol?

I dated this girl who, everytime I ate deer meat she would say. "You are eating Bambi's mom". I finally had enough one night when she said this and responded with, "Well, you ate some of Bessy the cow the other night, and I didn't hear you say anything about that!" She shut up from then on out.laugh

Either or...you're killing something. Can't use that justification if you also kill something. As soon as the plants root is pulled it dies, slowly, no less...cows get killed for beef, which isn't slow, figures as much...

[snip]we were divided into 2 groups the vegetarians and the non-vegetarians[...] What are your views on this issue?

I'm a pescatarian. Why? The main reason is because my
live-in girlfriend at the time was a pescatarian - it
just made things easier when going out to eat or when
fixing meals at home. She eventually moved away (about
6 years ago), but I have continued the diet.

It turns out "the other reason" is for for health reasons.
I noticed within a couple of weeks, I started to feel
better, which is why I've continued the diet (I've never
considered being pescatarian to "save" any animals).

Forget cornflakes..blahhhhhhh
give me sausage and eggs, and a side order of bacon:banana:

My daughter starting eating a vegetation diet as around age 5 when I told her where 'chicken' from.
If an animal had to die, she won't eat it, or wear it.
No leather, or make up, or hair care products that are made from animals or tested on animals.
She's not a pest about it, or a nut about it.
She lives with me, and I eat about anything that won't eat me first.

90% of all species on this planet are insects

fully one quarter of all the biomass is insects

in one square mile of pasture there are more insects than all the humans on this planet

if we were really concerned about having the least impact on the earth we'd be eating bugs

What is the comparison between human biomass per square mile of land verse the biomass of insects per square mile if we are now comparing mass. An insect has a miniscule biomass compared to a human thus it is evident and clear that their would be 90% more species in any relative area then larger species of animals due to space limitations, competition for resources, etc. It takes less biomass to sustain individual insects too. I would assume that the largest biomass would belong to the kingdom plantae? You should be slightly more clear in explanations as some times facts can be misleading.

I had to read that three times

and it still didnt make sense

--humans comprise about 250 million tons (0.33%)

Meat is protein. Without it we wouldn't exist.

Based on what you've written, you're assuming a person
can *only* get protein from [red] meat. And we all know
that is a false statement.

As a matter of fact, some of the best proteins aren't
even assimilated from meat product. The healthiest and
most fit person I know of is Jack LaLanne (currently 95):

"Jack LaLanne begins each and every day with 50 grams of
soy protein. The Jack LaLanne diet is not completely
vegetarian, but he doesn't eat chicken, red meat or
white sugar. He gets most of his protein from egg whites,
soy protein and occasionally fish."

First of all you might want to check your grammar. This whole post appears to be one long sentence, but thats not my point. You know there are other reasons for not eating meat. Who told you that eating meat doesn't disturb the ecoligical order? What about all the deforestation in Brazil due to cattle herding? There are dire consequences for the planet if illegal deforestation associated with the beef and leather industries is not stopped because the Amazon rainforests absorb and hold huge quantities of carbon pollution. Not to mention the levels of Methane gas when cattle are mass produced. Sure, you could argue that the amount of pesticides and fertilizers seeping into our rivers and water supply are at dangerous levels and its true. However you're the one lashing out at us and the real culprits are the mega multi- national corporations that are reaping what we sow.

Ask your self this: Would you be prepared to work in a slaughterhouse and kill the animals you eat?

My point is there is more involved in this topic than you and I listed.

Please excuse my point and grammar
i agree with you in fact, everything we do for our comfort causes problems and as you have clearly stated both are equally bad.
Scientists are coming up with ways to improve farming and breeding (or at least i hope!)

but my friends point was that killing 1 type of life form and consuming it and then saying that killing animals is hypocrisy i didn't say i agree in fact i believe it was meant as a joke
so basically what he was trying to say was

for vegetarians

humans> animals> plants

for my friend

humans> animals=plants

kind of funny

grammar must be more important than the animals lol

the grammar is always the first attack it seems

but hey

what do i know

I do know one reoccuring commonality among mammals.

Meat eaters develop larger brains than herbivores. BY NO MEANS DO I EQUATE THIS WITH HUMANS. But, in the animal kingdom, it is fact.

What I never understood.....in the wild, herbivores are generally much bigger than omnivores or carnivores.....elephants, hippos, rhinos ect, compared to humans, lions, hyenas, jackals.

It is the polar opposite within the human species. I have never met a plush vegetarian. Not really making a point...just an observation that I don't understand.

Our teeth are not those of animals who catch and eat meat. We have grinders, as vegtable eating mammals. By the time a person is 60 they have about 2-5 lbs of meat in their intestines that have built up. Hence more of the colonoscopies and problems of such. Look at people in that age group...so many with portruding lower abdomins.
Our bodies are not set up to process meat they way people consume it. But to each their own.
I agree that meat eaters go after vegetarians versus, one reason could be that because eating meat also increases aggression in people.

we have both types of teeth. molars for grinding grains and canines for tearing flesh. the human body is evolved as an omnivore. not as a herbivore or as a carnivore
