I am trying to download AVG Free 9.0. Whenever I go to the setup menu and hit "run" it begins and immediately aborts as an obnoxious balloon I've been getting for months insists that my hard drive is full and needs to be purged.

It just now dawns on me that the balloon may be a manifestation of a virus, and a serious one. It pops up every time I run a video. When I click the disc icon it raises a menu of temporary files, etc, except on occasions when a pop up appears telling me its cleaning my drive without me having made any such command (or even given a prompt).

After it does this, I get a pop up telling me that my C-drive has dangerously low space (always with an accompanied random number) and imploring me to go to add/delete programs to delete non essentials.

I suspect I've some malicious software, but I don't know what to do, as any attempt to download anti virus software appears to be prevented. Is my assessment accurate? Am I hopelessly and utterly fracked or is there something I can do?

First of all. How big a harddrive have you got? When was the last time that you did a defagmentation and a clean up of it? You can also try turning off your firewall as well, as AVG 8.5 and 9 may not install on your system with your firewall running. Also what programe are you currently running, XP Home Edition, XP Pro, Vista, or 7?. I know that AVG will not run properly on Windows 7 as I have tried it and I found that I had a really bad time trying to get it to run properly.
You can try a disk clean in the property section of you harddrive, but you will have to restart your pc and let it run its course. It depends on how big your hardrive is and how much you have on it to how long it will take to finish. I do mine once a month and I have no trouble with this pc that I am useing and I am useing XP Home Edition on this one, but I am running Windows 7 on one of my other pc's and still do a disk clean up once a month on it.

I just thought of something. Could it be that my cache is merely full and needs to be emptied? If so, how might I accomplish this?

to see what space is left on your hard drive, go to "My computer", find where it list your hard drive c:\, click with the RIGHT button with your mouse, and look beside the pie chart. if the space used up reflects what your pop-up "balloons" say, its possible that your hard drive is full. go to add/remove programs, delete old programs you never use, then try reinstalling avg. if that doesn't work:

You need at least 15% free space on your main drive for windows to swap and run programs without problems. If your drive is getting to full your computer will slow down (because windows has to work harder with the limited space).

So if you have a 80go drive you need at least 12go of free space for optimal work it can go down to 10% (8go) without a problem but anything under that and your computer will have problems working properly.

If when you try to watch video or install programs those balloons open it is because you have limited space to either install new programs and to open flies to run videos.

Check by right clicking on your hard drive in My Computer and selecting Properties in there it will show how much frre space you have.

After get rid of any programs you do not need and make back ups of your personal files and then delete the ones on your pc.

Best solution would be to buy a new drive and then transfer all your personal files and video on that drive so to free space on your C:\

Also do a defragmentation often, always empty your recycle bin and use a program like CCleaner to delete any temp or useless files on your PC.

Then window sounds like windows telling you to clean house up as your hard drive is getting over full, sometimes having a lot on hard drive can seem to make computer run unstable.
