I didn't read the thread. And it's probably already been stated. But you can't force someone to be rehabilitated. They have to WANT it.

The thread states that those who want it and are not offered it..and are sent to jail instead, are we really serving them? Should the money go into the rehab to help rehab those who want help or continue to punish the addict for their addiction.... |

Jesus may forgive, but the State prosecutes. That's exactly it. Then there is morality, coming in two flavours: Societal moral code and personal moral judgement. So we have to balance four things here: 1. Law 2. Religion 3. Morality 4. Personal bias. Can NOT be done. Despite the very fact that the four have very common elements, views, opinions and directions. Still can't balance all four. And therefore something has to give each time there is a discrepancy. |

Whow. First time a slim babe with real skin over her flesh agreed with me in what must be like 28-35 years. I took out the s from "fours". I had to. It would have seemed like someone's so wasted that they fall down when they crawl. I did make that typo, in the original thread, which I edited out just now. My apologies. |

It would seem most are thinking that breaking the law is breaking the law...regardless of what the law is and if an addict screws up then the jail time is justified.
So we keep putting money into jails and inmates, release them and keep sending them back, and the cycle continues and there is no rehab and it goes on and on and on... |

We have been fighting the "war on drugs" sense the 1920s and the only thing that's changed is MORE people use drugs today than ever before.
The time has come to try something different. |

Too many involved without a personal experience perhaps... |

In small towns, there exist less options. In larger cities and communities, there exist more options. It seems that is the issue here more than anything.
And it's not to say that breaking the law is black and white in every court. But, the laws broken is viewed first, as the safety and well being of society is paramount. If the courts involved have the ability to help with addiction, they usually do. If you live within a community that does not have those resources, then I sadly say it's up to the defendant to find a way. Counseling, AA meetings, whatever you need to do. |

Salt Lake city is not so far from me..the mentality of the community I live in is sort of..just lock them up, throw the key away. We don't even have a homeless shelter in the entire county...and beyond. There are groups who have tried to get things going..the attitudes of most is they don't want one here, then the homeless will go somewhere else. Like up to Salt Lake City... It's strange here. Now as times are getting tougher for some, people are seeing some of "their own", so to speak, needing help. So possibly that will change some minds and hearts.. |
