It is sad to know but it does happen my ex boss lost his dog to coyotes. The dog stayed around the house when let out so it does happen even to those that take good care of them...

Myself heck I lost sassy a while back for a couple of days and went stir crazy it was not due to coyotes it was due to humans that took her. But due to other people I was able to find her and get her back..... Now she don't get out of my site....noway

I think everyone here knows I have an immense amount of respect for dogs, hell, I love dogs more than people...I just got done smoking a cigarette outside and listening to the worst thing in the world for me, you could hear the dog barking...then the coyotes, frantic barking, ferocious howling...then nothing. Someone just lost the most loyal friend they will ever have in their life...you humans cease to live up to what I see most of you as...

I am sure it was a horrible thing to hear. I make sure no one is behind me when I see an animal and I will slam my brakes to avoid hitting an animal if I can (doesn't matter possum, squirrel, fox, etc.)Maybe the dog got out and the owner couldn't find it. It does happens sometimes you know. I love my dog Reese that had 12 puppies 4 wks ago. I love being covered in playful lovable puppies and sooo cute (Chocolate Labs).

I'm going to answer a few posts here, just wanted to quote this one. The dog wasn't out, you could tell from its barking that it was in one spot and stayed there until it was taken out. Yes, it is the circle of life, but it is preventable for the most part. Take me for instance, I stay out with my dogs, I've also nailed a coyote with a kick to the ribs when it went at another dog in a park in Utah (not advisable, use a flashlight if available). Matter of fact I believe you can scare most coyotes off by my making loud noises, I know you can use a flashlight and spot them and they usually run away.

I don't dislike all humans...just a large chunk of them.

I love dog and cats and all domisticated animals but coyotes would not come to humans backyards to eat their pets if we didn't start living in their backyards.

It's a sad truth that the more we are (humans) the less place the rest of the animal kingdom as places to live.

It is a sad thing I know my boss after that happen and he lost his dog he got a hold of some people that track coyotes to get rid of them... Sure some may say that is awful as well but coyotes will attack small children at times as well as livestock.....

its disgusting the world we live in where alot of people think of animals as trash,or they dont have any feelings, they abuse them, kill them,or use them as entertainment by making fight another animal.I love animals and will literally hurt anyone who will hurt an animal.

This is so sad. Our dog is a member of our family. I would be heartbroken if something happened to him.

I love dogs too. I wouldnt willfully put one in danger but I do tend to count on them to be DOGS and able to survive without my constant protection.

That's cats...dogs are more reliant on people than that, they can survive on their own but it takes years of them being neglected to do so...I'm in the middle of the suburbs, these dogs are ultimately screwed in a one on one with a coyote.

I never knew they had coyotes in Illinois.

I am really sorry you had to be upset by this. It is upsetting to be sure.

Coyotes serve a purpose (keeping rats and other small animals down, cleaning up garbage) but unfortuneately they tend to outbreed the habitat without their natural predators. Maybe your local Grange or Animal Control can give you some cages to catch them or even spay them. Worse come to worse thin the pack.

Many pet owners don't understand that leaving pet dishes and un-enclosed trash containers around attracts all kinds of creatures.
That and we are useing more and more natural habitats and the wild life have no where to go.

Unfortuneately having a dog, coyote, or cross breed in heat will make a dog do some pretty incredible things to get loose.

Maybe it depends upon the dog and how 'domestic' their owner makes them. I owned a German Shephard most of my life and he was just about as self sufficient as any wild dog might be. He loved and protected us but his instincts werent trained out of him. He was a survivor ,,(died of old age) I do miss him.

Breed is a big player, but I am pretty sure the dog I heard was a small house dog. More than likely a breed that shouldn't have been out of the house that late at night, sounded kind of like a schnauzer or alike. Either way, your dog protects you...protect your dog.

Thank you, I will remember that if I ever come face to face with a coyote. Knowledge gained is a good thing.
