Don't believe in the Bible but you still believe in God..
..Does that make you any less of a believer?

I had this debate with a Priest, and I was wondering if I could have some outside opinions.

Thanx.

i never firmly believed that the bible was the word of God, verbatim. i've even heard some priest say that the bible was not meant to be taken word for word but rather as entire stories.

i believe in God, and i do believe in his son Jesus Christ and my faith is very strong. i try to live my life accordingly, with the belief that God knows i'm doing a pretty okay job of it.

i'd still call myself a believer.

That all depends on who you ask. There are many different kinds of followers of Christ and they have very different beliefs on what is required to be a believer. The answers will range from the Bible being a literal book that must be believed word for word to the Bible being a book of stories to help guide you and give you direction without being taken literally. And, of course, most fall into the middle saying that some of it is literal and some of it is not and you must let the Holy Spirit show you which is which.

Ultimately, only you can decide for yourself what is true. Good luck in your search. flowerforyou

I don't believe in the bible, I believe Jesus walked the earth however is not my personal savior. I believe in a higher power, an energy of love, and karma.. and I am very spiritual. My beliefs keep me in check much more effectively than the fear of damnation.

I consider myself a believer..although I'm sure some wouldn't, which matters not.

jesus did walk the earth a couple thousand years ago and his teachings influenced billions, including me, to lead decent, empathetic lives. but i have no reason to think that he is the son of some god or that his mother was a virgin. if you believe in a god then you are a believer regardless of what you think of the bible. a muslim likewise believes in a god and disregards the teachings of the bible.

There are many who would say that you should not ask the general public a question like this - that you should only ask another Recognized Believer(tm), lest you be led astray by our non-belief.

Personally, I think you are on the right path! I heard that book was put together by some council; like there was a bunch of books, see, and a group of people got together and VOTED (or at least discussed, then decided by some means) on which books were in, and which were out.

Some people think God had a hand in that; but I consider the Bible to be a human creation.

Edit: Seriously, I don't want to harm your 'spiritual growth'. I think you should post this question in the Christian Singles section and see what they say there.

the word "believer" is a term, in the logical sense, which means someone who believes something. therefore if you believe in god, you're a believer. if you believe in the tooth fairy, you are a believer. if you believe in the spaghetti monster, you're a believer.

if you however mean to ask if you're a believer by christian standards then i'd agree that you should ask this question in the christian forums for more favourable answers.

Thanx to all gave me their input.
However, by in no means, am I 'Christian' or otherwise..
In all honesty, idk what I actually believe in anymore..

So, that's basically why I placed this in general and not Christian forum; becuz I know the main Christian response..
Heard enough round my way..

Thanx again! Appreciating all your help;

M

My ex said that one didn't need to read the Bible at all to be a Christian. They just had to believe in and take Jesus as their Saviour and Lord and all of that. His excuse for Christians not knowing their Book.

I'm Pagan, raised as an Atheist, originally. And as is typical know more about the Bible(s) then most of the locals around here that are claiming to be "good" Christians.

Yeah, he was a Baptist. Such a good one, he was cheating on his wife. Didn't seem to cause him upset, though I was gone immediately after I found out!!!
