Does anyone know of a safe way to sedate a cat for travel purposes. I tried to give her to her adoptive family yesterday and it didn't go well at all. She weighs about 11-12 pounds. Someone told me you can use human sinus spray, just squirt a little toward her nostrils and that will sedate her. Any one ever heard of this?
Looking for suggestions before calling vet for drugs, which may be a problem because she is a bit behind on her Dr. visits....bad Mommy. |

If the exact same ingredients are in the human sinus spray at the right dosage for a creature 11-12 pounds it might work but I kinda doubt it. Better to be on the safe side |

Better to be on the safe side Thanks Daytime, I agree but am hoping for alternatives because I don't want an expensive vet visit just to get some help so that i can give her away. Will if I have to of course but... |

Besides I am wondering if a vet will prescribe without seeing her and with out sedation I can't get her in a crate to put her in the car???? Really I was awake all night over this!

Your cat would have to show up at the vet, a vet would have to prescribe something specifically for your cat. Don't try shortcuts, just take the cat to a vet or don't take the cat on the trip. |

Put a hood over kitties head and put him/her in the crate and remove the hood from inside the crate. |

Best idea, wrap her securely in a towel or blanket, just put the whole thing into the crate. She'll get out on her own, most likely. Most cats hate cars and if they're wrapped and crated, they feel a little more secure. |

This may sound cruel, but it's what we do here with bitey scratchy critters....
On a short trip.... place the cat into a pillow slip... a continental sized one if you have it... and tie off the end...place the cat on the floor well of the car, make sure the air con is on the feet setting, and drive. The pillow case stops the cat harming you, or itself, it's enclosed, it's soft.... and the cat is safe. Remember to tie the top of the pillow case securely. We cart chooks, cats, snakes, goanna, possums, small wallabies the same way....and it doesn't hurt them... it was suggested by the local vet years ago...it's free, and we all have pillow slips. |

Thank you Jess, that sounds pretty reasonable too and maybe even easier than wrapping in towel and putting into crate. I just wish this was over with. I think I found her a good home and am as emotionally ready to give her up as I will ever be. |

I think I got the answer....... Krupa, you freak! Perhaps you should post a pic of your cat, Fluffy...now THAT is one sedate cat! |
|
|
|
grab and lift the cat by the scruff of the neck
that position semi paralyzes them and you can just drop the cat into the crate it doesnt hurt the cat and is the way their moms carry them when they are kittens |
|
|
|
put it in the dryer on high for 5 to 10 minutes
j/k im against animal cruelty |

Definitely call the vet. They may be able to provide a sedative without an expensive vet visit. That would be the safest way.
