so last night I went to this benefit with friends at a local bar and there was this gorgeous girl there who was slightly curvy and she right in the middle of a conversation refered to herself as ugly.

the sneer came before i could actually get control of my face but i pulled it back real quick and don't know whether she noticed but i couldn't help wanting to suddenly walk away.

What do you think about people who refer to themselves as ugly?

what about in a joking manor?

for some reason.. i think its just creepy. like either you really feel that way and need to grow some self esteem or you're doin it so someone else will tell you otherwise. either way... i'm not sure i like it in any way shape or form.

no bueno.

Oh, wow!! I thought you were just referring to me and had something to say..............

Well, sometimes people say that and mean it. Sometimes they feel ugly that night or in comparison to others around. And as you know, sometimes they want BADLY to hear the opposite and attract attention to feed their bottomless egos.

Some people do it for attention. "Oh I'm sooo ugly." "No you're not, you're beautiful." Insert blush here. "Wow, thanks." Yeah some people are weird like that.

maybe her self esteem has been beat down and she believes she is ugly...
or maybe she is fishing for compliments, either way her self esteem is not so great..jmo, on what you said about it.

I knew a girl that was totally stunning by high school but when growing up was very homely. Not plain, but downright homely. More allergies than you could count, terrible skin condition, extremely bad teeth, and hair issues.

But after braces, growing out of the allergies and skin condition, and a cultural shift in popular hair styles and general hair care, she could have been a model if she wanted.

But she still had the 'ugly duckling' image of herself.

Some beautiful people did not grow up that way and often have trouble seeing it in themselves.

But some are just fishing for compliments and I totally understand the urge to sneer or even smack the person up side the head.

it blows me away how this has become such commonplace in our society.

i mean when has it ever been acceptable to feel that way about yourself?

i know soo many people who do but to take it to a point to announce it in public like some crazy flag over your head makes me think you're nuts.

My favorite is when they're drop dead gorgeous and everyone thinks so, and every so often they hang their head and peer out from beneath bangs and say, "do you think i'm ugly?" And then you agree and they're all devastated. What's that about?pitchfork

Almost makes you wish they'd take a header into broken glass so they'd have something to complain about...almost.

Ugly is as ugly does.

Also some people really can't see themselves for a variety of reasons already addressed here. BUT just as an example...I went from 179 lbs. to 113 lbs and COULD NOT SEE THIN for a very long time. Granted there were other issues going on (death etc) But still I had been heavy for so long that I didn't see what was really in the mirror!

This said, I think that usually comments like this are just fishing expeditions! Smack and walk!!
