Carving is probably my favourite passtime, I started about a year ago and woodspirits are what I carve the most. Here are a couple of my recent ones :) (Click the thumbnails for larger pics)
Comments welcome :) Raven |

This is my latest Lime woodspirit incence holder. Tried a different beard on this one, a plait. What do you think?
Each one takes about 4 hours carving, this one took as long to carve the hair and beard as all the rest put together Thank you for all your comments Raven |

Beautiful! ... Very fine work, squire!
Would love one w/ a female essence that's been channeled in my own mythological likeness ... I once had an impressive cane collection. ... ... |

Thank you I've only managed to make one with a female face, they are much harder to do!

whats the diff between a plait and a braid?
Plait's are flattened....Braids have a rounded flow...
Anyhoo Great job man! I can't sculpt to save my life...but, I am fair at modeling...(for the people who don't know the difference....sculpting is taking away medium while modeling is adding medium.....) Your work is very nice. got the whole Green man/ Gaelic thing going for it. I admire your skillz home boy....the work you do is merciless and bears no forgveness towards mistakes....I know....it is kind of like scrimshaw....one wrong move is a mistake forever.... You definitely got talent. |

Thank you! I'm the opposite - I can sculpt some but modeling is beyond me.

These are fantastic.
You are great at what you do. what tools do you need for this? |
Thanks You need a basic set of carving chisels and a small-bladed knife. I use a set by Flexcut which has 1 handle and interchangeable blades, it's a nice little portable set. I reallywant another detail knife for doing the eyes, they are the hardest bit to get lookingright I think. It's also where most of the expression in the faces comes from.
To be honest I'm not much more than a beginner, I really don't know how to get the best out of my tools. I want to do some more female faces but I've only managed one so far. They are sooo much more difficult! It's easy when you can hide half the face in hair Raven |

very nice work, fascinating, I was thinking about buying me a wood carving full set from my local hobby lobby sometimes soon, but I believe my father has one he has never used that I can borrow. I have done clay in the past it was alot of fun. I do painting these days and sale my artwork through a doctors office. It pays all right and i have a commissioned piece to do now from one of the doctors there. smiles
