I picked him up and petted him, he pecked me in the eye.

sometimes people act like that, when you see they are in need...
a kindness given, is misunderstood, and can break your heart indeed.

but understand, their trusts' been shattered, have patience, keep on giving...
they will come to appreciate, as they learn to go on living.

a kindness here...compassion there, is what it's all about...
that's why we have two eyes to see...in case one gets pecked out!
