I just saw my children's back to school resource list, and although it is far better than what their old school demands (yes I mean demands), there are still some obvious questions. Thankfully I didn't see anything I would refuse to get (like 7 boxes of kleenex brand tissues that their old school demanded), but some items, or requirements of items, such as specific colored folders, seems a bit overbearing to me. Their lists are pasted below, let me know what you think. And again, There is nothing I outright disagree with, though I think some more leniency in some cases should be used.

Second Grade

A package of pencils & pencil-top Erasers (you will need more throughout the year)
1 large eraser
School Glue (Stick and Bottle)
1- 24 pack of crayons
pencil box or pouch
3 plain pocket folders w/ the metal prongs inside (red, blue, green - do not write your names in these please)
1 Pocket folder of your choice (it can have a design on it)
2 1-subject notebooks
1- 4-pack of Dry Erase Markers (thin ones work the best)
backpack (without wheels)

Fourth Grade

5 Composition notebooks
1 "Friday" folder
1 homework folder (optional as we will use our agenda to hold homework)
1 plastic GREEN pocket folder
2 Pkg Wide Ruled Loose Leaf Paper
pencils (at least 1 dozen)
crayons (24 or 48-count) OR colored pencils
red pens
glue (sticks or bottle)
pencil box or pouch

Wow no kleenex??? We had to supply 3 boxes of those, sandwich baggies, sharpies and dry eraser markers...

I will trade you school lists?

I DO have to say though, that I think it is wrong to ban the wheeled back packs; I don't know about this school as we just moved here, but most schools are sending kids home with ten and twenty pounds worth of books daily, and that is a LOT for someone that small to carry on their back.

Oh I totally agree with that. It isn't good for their backs at all.

And now they have to keep their backpacks in their lockers?

I understand, I just think it is wrong that such a "little" percentage can cause everyone to have to suffer.

Lol, the schools did not like my stance on the boxes of kleenex issue (they are so expensive). I sent one roll of toilet paper in my sons backpack and renewed it as neccesary during winter and allergy seasons. I specifically told the teachers he had his own supply, and that I wasn't supplying other kids, nor would I support kleenex over another brand (keep in mind I was on public assistance at the time as well, so every penny was counted carefully).

Personally the dry erase markers seem a bit over as well, but....

laugh laugh laugh

That is too funny!

I don't even send the kleenex anymore. My son is in 8th grade. If he needs to blow his nose, he knows where the bathroom is...laugh

i noticed that this year at my daughters school, we were asked to buy quite a few of the teachers supplys. such as; post-its, rubberbands, dry erase markers, permanent markers, kleenex, 3pks of baby wipes, 1 box of staples.....etc,etc. and like you, im not disagreeing to buy them i just wonder what happened to the school boards money.... shouldnt they provide their staff with supplies?

Oh there have been official studies done on the subject, and its been proven to lead to back disorders and bad knees.

I know. I was highly upset with it as well.

But our schools now have two text books. One for class and one for home, so they no longer have to carry them all of the time.

The problem is that the government (at all levels) is cutting back more and more on school funds, to where some schools are actually being forced to drop all classes that are not core subject related, which is a shame. Some millionaire will donate say 30 million dollars to the education fund, and the government will then reduce the fund itself by 20 million, because of the donation; if not even higher.

I agree toilet roll is fine... I was a teacher in UK for many years and we provided tissues but they were very expensive so we substituted toilet tissue and nobody complained lol

I dont agree with online or on cd. Online prevents some students from accessing them, and cd, detracts from reading skills. I agree with the cd as a supplementary idea, but you HAVE to have the actual text books as the primary.

ANd I agree with the idea of two books pper subject, as students can no longer claimt o have forgotten their books, lol. However some schools (public, not private) require a deposit for each book at the beginning of the year, which gets expensive as well.

The school districts got most of the stimulous. They just chose to
build new schools instead of giving to the one's they already had.
