Topic: School Supply Lists | |

Wow lilith. What grade is that? Second grade. Oh, and we get a school fee bill in October. Plus I bought Lysol off the "giving tree". For those of you that don't buy what is on the list, the school fees I pay are for those supplies the teachers buy to supplement what is not provided. Which isn't fair. |

Well I too have to pay school fees, and I do apologize but kleenex is the ONLY thing I refuse to buy. And that was only this year. I always buy what they ask for.
We had a seperate list for what had to go to the teacher. Here it is Ruler Scissors Washable Markers Protractor Graph Paper Stick Glue Construction paper, 50 count and white must be included and my favorite kleenex |

Ha, wait til they middle school are and required to get a calculator that costs over $100. THAT was fun Or, hey, my son is learning disabled and is physically unable to write more than his name. If he wants to take notes, I have to provide him with a laptop. Which, BTW, he's not allowed to have at school because it might get stolen out of his locker, which the school provides but is not responsible for when the locks don't work. Nor am I able to put another lock on his locker. And since they are not allowed to take backpacks to class, he can't keep it in there. Plus, the PE uniforms that are required because god forbid they simply wear some sweats and a T-shirt not emblazoned with the school mascot. Plus, the science lab fees. Plus, the "class" fees which cover the end of year party. Plus, whatever other class fees they impose, depending on which classes he takes.
He starts high school this year. I'm very afraid And we wonder why our kids aren't learning, the schools are more concerned with everything BUT teaching. |

I didn't mean to say you were responsible for my bill... I didn't mean that. I'm just saying that if the parents couldn't or didn't buy what was required, why should all get billed later?
There must be a better way. And Kleenex is a brand, it's just used as a noun. You can buy the cheapy ones at the dollar tree. It's a language barrier, IMO. |

Good gravy, Suze....
That petrified me. I'm only in second grade! |

Yes, I figured you were talking in general and I totally agree.
I use to buy them at the dollar store all of the time. But 8th grade really? That is for elementary kids. I think as young adults they should be allowed to go to the bathrooma and know when they need to blow their nose. Also, why go to school if you are sick? They will only spread the germs and make everyone else sick. |

I like having tissues to blow my nose in. My kiddo has terrible allergies and blows his nose ten times an hour in fall and spring. I brought in three boxes of tissues. Because he uses all three himself!

The school districts got most of the stimulus. They just chose to build new schools instead of giving to the one's they already had. The problem there though is everywhere I look, the local spending authority look at the fact that the schools got extra money from teh stimulus and cut back their budgets on the school side as much as they could to match the stimulus, so there's no real gain for the school district. |

Good gravy, Suze.... That petrified me. I'm only in second grade! Tell me. And yup, each teacher requires a specific color folder, binder, etc. I can't even buy school supplies until after the first day of class. Made that mistake once, then had to buy everything over again. I get the color thing, though. The kids leave their folders in the room and each period gets its own color, it's just an organization thing. But, really, when my kid takes his binders to and from class every day, does it really matter what color it is? |

In that case lilith, I would do the same
Daniel, that is what I was saying. They are taking the money to build new schools. NOT to help the ones they already have. I work in the commercial construction field and bidding on these jobs everyday. It kind of sickens me. I do agree some districts may need new schools, but the schools they already have need some of that money as well. |

...my son is learning disabled and is physically unable to write more than his name. If he wants to take notes, I have to provide him with a laptop. If I may make a suggestion for this issue, and its one my brother used, due to learning impairments (dyslexia), instead of going with a laptop, get him a tape recorder that can sit on his desk, or by the teachers desk (I recommend his own desk so if she does any one on one with him it picks it up). |

Not allowed. I've been dealing with this since 2nd grade. His schools and teachers HATE me with a passion. Because since I can't provide him with the technology he needs and the schools won't, I INSIST that they provide with either a scribe or the teacher is REQUIRED to provide him with notes. I appeal every single grade they give if it includes writing and he's not given ample time or it is marked down because it's illegible. My son is smart as a whip but it's a struggle each and every day, to the point where he often just gives up and refuses to do anything at all. It's ridiculous. |

The schools in the city I work in have khakis and polo shirts only.
No hoodies permitted. Not in my district though. No gangs here.... But, Trapper folders are prohibited. I realized last year, after asking, that the restrictions, especially on brand, are to keep the parents from buying too cheap or too expensive.... which emphasizes class issues and can identify the "rich" versus "poor" kids. The schools are trying to create a standard, to prevent the richies bringing in super ultra expensive stuff in my town.. I think. But hey, I am just a renter who lives there for the schools. |

I am not sure about where you are from, but in Michigan, where I grew up, my mother had to take it to court for my brother to have the tape recorder, as the school tried to disallow it there as well. If you can get your doctor to put in writing that this is needed, or would be an obvious benefit to the point of being detrimental to NOT have it, then I would think that the schools could not legally tell you no for the tape recorder. |

#1 item here in N.Y. is hand sanitizer. Let the H1N1 fight begin.

I just bought all the "LIST" stuff today...yeah...had a hard time finding those colored folders. Went to three stores and finally scored! Job done! I can't imagine having three or more kids...the stuff really adds up to some serious money.

I DO have to say though, that I think it is wrong to ban the wheeled back packs; I don't know about this school as we just moved here, but most schools are sending kids home with ten and twenty pounds worth of books daily, and that is a LOT for someone that small to carry on their back. my child has doctor's orders to have a wheeled backpack. they also have to carry her stuff through the school, heh. i understand that the wheels are hard on the floor, but i don't really care. |
