When The Tide Brings

Composure, sullen distracted
steps dragging
toes dug into the sand
posturing defeat.

In the cool of the morning
light breaking through
leaving rays, wands
reaching to touch.

A body of evidence
strewn, dragged from
the tide pools along
the water line.

Hunched over
arms wrapped around
heaving and deep
sighs, sobbing.

In the air
no differentiating,
the salty spew
of the crashing wave.

We have walked
this beach, the sand
that disappears
teasing solid grounding.


Ambiguous looking out
calling the horizon hope,
so far removed
from our touch.

I will look for you,
listen for your heart, in mine
see your footprints
when the tide brings you
home.
