HOLY CHIT!!! LOOK LEX!!!!

There really IS a template!!!!!

I knew there had to be one. And I knew it was only a matter of time before we got proof.

Now I feel just like Woodward and Bernstein. Er, one or the other. Whichever one had the nice hat.

Well really, who's to judge what makes a profile bad??!!

I think it's just a matter of subjective interpretation, like so many other things. Not "right," not "wrong," but "just my opinion." I think there are a lot of really horrible profiles out there, that's my view, and it really doesn't make any difference to me if people agree or not. The essence of having an opinion is that it's entirely self-generated and therefore not to be taken as a "universal truth."

There are no instructions, most folks are flyin' by the seat of their britches, goin by what other profiles say sometimes. Most are trying to put their best foot forward, I think. Many folks I think really grappled at what to state in their profiles. Still some others find it difficult to talk about themselves.

That's very true, but I don't see that as being my problem. If I have the right to comment, in a very vague and nebulous way, about profile proclivities that I find less than acceptable, then where's the harm?

If people are offended by the fact that I post something like "There sure are a lot of terrible profiles out there," it's because they've made a choice to be offended. I'm not responsible for their choices.

I would say many folks don't have a flare for expression as you do Lex, and many cannot relate to you on an intellectual level, including me, but...you know what, they don't have to.

I'm not asking them to. All I'm saying is "Why are so many profiles so awful?" I think it's a legitimate question. If someone has enough of a persecution complex that they think "He must be talking about ME!" then, again, that's hardly my problem.

Bottom line: we're operating in a written medium. If someone doesn't care enough about the image they convey to make that image decipherable, then they shouldn't be shocked and appalled when someone notices this.

You are in a league, intelletctually, many folks cannot and do not relate to, so many may never meet your standards.

Again, I'm not asking them to. I'm saying "Hey, you claim to be here to meet somebody, etc., but you don't say anything about yourself, you give us no clue about who/what you're looking for, and your profile reads like a billion others I've read." And I have a little fun with it at the same time.

While I think some folks could improve their profiles, in most cases they are putting forth a true picture of who they are, can't fault 'em for that, unless of course, they are a scammer. If you do not like the manner they have presented themselves, it's simple, move on.

I do move on. And I see the exact same drivel, over and over and over again.

My understanding is that I still have the right to comment on this, provided no names are named.

Let's turn it around -- why do some people (and this is a distinct minority) feel that it's their job to tell people "You cannot express your opinion because I don't agree with it" -- ??

Sorry, that's not the way it works.

If my posts, my simple little generically funny posts, with no identifiable targets, are SO VERY OFFENSIVE to people, then let THEM move on -- they don't have to read anything I write.

I get a lot of mail about profiles. 95% of it is positive and appreciative. The rest is along the lines of "You shouldn't make fun of people."

I write back and say "Show me where I've ever made fun of a specific identifiable person." They can't.

There are bad profiles out there. I say so. I have fun with this concept. Would the world be better off if we all pretended this was not the case?

How long does it take for profiles to update when you change them?

Tom -- I have always loved your profile; it's the only one I've ever seen with the line:

"I am 1,714,593,354 seconds old."

More than that, though, I really do get a sense of who you are from reading your profile; and, yes, we've known each other awhile and done some communicating here and elsewhere, and simply knowing someone over time creates more of a connection with that person if they're both being real....which I'm quite sure you are....!!

"Over the top"? Nahhh. Lots of info, for sure, but I've always said more is better....

New T-shirt idea:

"Over 20,000,000 Bad Profiles Read!"

It's no secret how I feel about the "I don't know what to write here" and "Anything you want to know, you'll have to ask" profiles. Complete wastes of time for everyone involved.

BUT --

I saw a profile yesterday that was actually quite long. I noticed the length, and I thought "Hmmmm, maybe someone has something to say, something worth reading....?"

Nope.

What it was, was EVERY SINGLE FREAKING PROFILE CLICHE EVER USED, all tacked together into one big long ultramegacliche. Most people just use 3 or 4 or 5 and let it go at that.

But someone actually took the time to compile this huge list of banalities and stick them all together to make one enormous and worthless non-statement, rather than say one thing that might provide a little insight into the actual person behind the compilation...

All it takes is a little imagination and a wee bit of thought.

Okay, I killed and re-wrote mine. I don't feel I was hiding anything before, but this time I said nuts with it and put it all out. I figure I was still no nonsense enough before, but this is me. :-)

Wishful thinking (for the most part).

... and the realization that one's profile is little more than an Ebay listing on The Great Auction of Love.

-Kerry O., "...but how would one sell a date on a 'Buy It Now' type auction?"

I don't mind a basic profile. Provided that he is being honest about himself. I would rather see that over a profile where a person lies and lists exotic interests just to impress someone.
