Well my pops always said the younger generations grow up in more
diversity and are used to different races. Especially urban areas. So I guess it will keep getting better unless the parents poison their children with prejudice. |

"Well my pops always said the younger generations grow up in more

BC, I agree to an extent, that there definitely is more diversity and that that contributes to better understanding and acceptance. But I grew up as a child of the '60s and I lived in a Los Angeles suburb that was racially mixed, predominantly with a combination of Caucasians and Hispanics. Unless I went to Los Angeles for a doctor's appointment or to the zoo or whatever, in my town (Glendale) it was a very rare thing to see a Black person. I laugh when I think back now at how, when I visited the beach, I used to think all the black people there were visiting from Africa! But anyway...it wasn't until 1970 when we moved to Nashville that I heard the "N" word. Not until that time did I ever hear any derogatory remark like that about a person. I could tell by the way people were saying it that it wasn't a "good" thing, so I asked them what a "n" was. They said a "black person." I was really confused. I said why would you call a person names just because of the color of their skin? I was only 12 years old. Now, I'm almost 49, and I STILL don't "get it." |

I have always been amazed by how much ignorance the human mind can
actually hold. |
