Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer, but wish we didn't. - Erica Jong

Socrates was a Greek philosopher who went around giving people good advice. They poisoned him. - Anonymous

Many recieve advice; only the wise profit from it. - Latin maxim

Friendship will not stand the strain of very much good advice for very long. - Robert Lynd

You forgot one-

"Opinions are like farting- they stink to everyone except you."

- Frank Zappa

laugh That would be for all those who insist on offering advice when they're not asked for it.

Just saying that quotes and the like for the most part don't really do anything aside from maybe giving you motivation for a short time. You can't live your life according to what anyone said as motivation, as what they said applied in an time period that is far different than that which we live in today and the phrases are not taking into account personal trials and tribulations...or you can, I don't really care.

I don't think that always rings true. There are quotes which can remain contemporary as well as provide inspiration and motivation daily. Like these:

"Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."
~ Abraham Lincoln

Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.
~ Albert Einstein

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them.
~ Henry David Thoreau

If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.
~ William Arthur Ward

All of those should be morally taught, I have those and I don't need to read a quote daily to know I'm capable of doing most things I want. My point is you shouldn't need a quote to motivate you, you should be motivating yourself.

Sure they should be taught. But being a believer in the power of positive thinking, I believe that positive quotes like these can 'tune' you in to the direction you want to go.

Whatever works for you, I don't care honestly...I don't get anything out of reading a quote, but I don't have dreams either, I just live for the moment.

Quotes neither take into consideration the events you have been through personally nor do they take into consideration who you are as a person. Quotes are merely a way to place an object in the path of a person as a way to either be an obstacle or a leap forth...however, most if not all fail at both.

This message is brought to you by Failure, don't worry, if you fail I'm sure there is a quote you can hang onto for the rest of your life...sort of like 'nice guys finish last'.

Aw, c'mon man! pfft. Whatever.

OK, yeah that makes more sense and is much more agreeable. I took it a different way at first, thinking you were just trying to discredit my thread and thinking I meant those as words to live by, and referring to me or the post as a failure.

I do agree that simple quotes are not applicable as words to live by in most situations, but when you're trying to sum something up, so to speak, they do help.

These were just something I pulled out of a Reader's Digest and thought they were either kinda funny, kinda cool, or in a few circumstances, might actually apply to some people in this time and day...but never meant them as words to live by.

I don't remember who, but someone once asked Hunter S. Thompsen why he set off a fire extiguisher during the middle of a lecture he was giving to which he replied that that was what he thought everyone expected him to do. Kind of discredits him, I think.
