A child should've been watched by a parent who should've been paying attention to what was going on.

An elderly person most likely wouldn't have been walking fast enough to not see an open manhole in the sidewalk, not to mention they have learned to pay attention in their lives....a practice that's fallen severely by the wayside.

A blind person would've noticed something amiss with their cane, not to mention they'd hear utility work going on. Don't sell them short.

A child runs quickly.

A elderly person doesn't see well. Put some vaseline on glasses and that's how many see.

A blind person can miss that with their cane. I've taught blind people. I'm not selling them short. Their cane can overstep the hole or go to the left or right too much.

A child could have their head turned while catching a ball and fall in. Somebody could be looking up at something and not see it.

The workers were negligent.

People are just STUPID. All this talk about how we are so much better than animals and yet here is yet another example of just how oblivious people are.

This is an example of a person who would not survive in the wild because they would not be paying attention to that predator stalking them. Unfortunately stupid people bred faster than smart ones to overcompensate for their stupidity and consequent suicidal tendencies.

A parent who watches their child is doing their parental duty, especially if they're allowing their small child to play in the front yard near a busy road. If the parents were paying attention like they should, they would've noticed that utility workers were working there and directed their child to play elsewhere.

If an elderly person has that bad of vision, they are probably aware of it, and know that they require assistance....again, somebody who is more capable of paying attention for them.

A blind person is much more aware of their existing faculties as a result of not having their sight, so they would hear work going on and take appropriate action.

She should have been more aware...yes. But the workers WERE negligent in not covering the manhole without warning signs or cones. From what I saw of the video...she was walking on a sidewalk not a street

what was her friend doing? she was walking with a friend....

Oh, come on! Be serious! Let's stop passing the buck for her by trying to justify her reaction. She can own up to her mistake and take the responsibility. She can take the personal accountability for this. The mother even said, the workers were possibly ten feet from the hole -- TEN FEET! That's less than the width of most living rooms! She said that she would've seen big orange cones in front of her....but she can't see a big, open, gaping hole in front of her on the sidewalk?? Not to mention, a big-*** utility truck with workers right next to it, ten feet away?? Gimme a break!

Bottom line is, she was doing the typical teenager thing -- she was lolligagging, not paying attention, and was focused on something that she shouldn't have been focused on. I have no pity for her whatsoever.

Yeah, it was pretty stupid for a worker to leave the manhole cover off and not put up some cones or horses.

I've have a friend that had a 3 yr. old wild son. He flew down the street so fast with his mom and me chasing him. There's a neighbor boy by me just like him. They were always having to chase him down the street.

I've worked in geriatrics. I know how the vision of the elderly changes. You're not going to convince me of anything different. Our eyes change and we don't see as well. Seriously, if you wear glasses, smear vasoline on them and see how it is. Imagine a cataract with it too.

I've taught blind people. Again, you're not going to change my mind. Btw, they can be deaf too.

Two people could be walking together and talking and looking at each other and have a problem with it too.

The worker was negligent. He should have put the cover back on or put barricades around the opening.

Especially when they were ten feet away with a huge truck that nobody apparently saw.

If it happened to my child, I would have been angry that the manhole was open like that. Then I would have laughed at my child for texting while they fell in the hole.

Winx, quit making excuses for this girl! She has just as much responsibility here as the next person!

Especially when it would have taken less then 5 minutes to put up some kind of warning.

I am not making excuses, btw. I've worked with disabled people for many years. I know how they are. I also know how children can be.

Especially when they WERE at the truck getting cones and such! Ten feet away, I might add.
