Radio Legend Casey Kasem Counted Down Hits For The Last Time
By Madison Jake on July 06, 2009 Casey Kasem's countdown is legendary. I listened to it as a kid, even as an adult, I'm sure you did, too. For 39 years he's been counting down the top weekly hits. Kasem pioneered the countdown format on the radio. Who can forget the dedications that he relayed through the years? And, in addition to numerous commercials and voices of cartoon characters, he is best-known for voicing Shaggy, Scooby-Doo's favorite pal. The 77-year-old surprised many by stating on his American Top 20 "we began the weekend of July 4, 1970, and after 39 years this will be our final countdown." Ryan Seacrest took over for Kasem's American Top 40 five years ago, but Kasem continued hosting the American Top 20 and American Top 10. Kasem's wife, Jeannie Kasem, said her husband decided to retire from the countdowns in order to pursue other projects, maybe even writing a memoir. |
