I would call it give up. I just recently went through this. Ive been trying to save the relation ship for about 6 moths.Its more like giving so much of your energy and time that you cant give anymore. Your drained so there is nothing more to give. You still have the feelings but you realize all the work is your own. The other party just doesnt give.

I gave up on my ex-wife when it became clear that her drugs and drinking were more important than our relationship. Most of the others I gave up on when it became clear that there would be no changing their domestication agendas.

Only if I feel I've done EVERYTHING in my power to understand where they are coming from. If I cant and theres no way to see eye to eye then yes I have given up before. What's sad is some people will just toss a friendship aside, regardless of how in-depth it was, over a simple misunderstanding. Just give up after not even attempting to see where things went wrong. Guess those people aren't the kind of friends I should have in my life anyway. C'est la vie!
