Last night at my apartment comples,there was no running water and the cops had to come and arrest the local drunk. This morning when i expressessed my concerns to my landlord he said,"That's just the way it is around here.". As a landlord shouldn't he be more concerned about his apartment complex? Fixing things that don't work and evicting deadbeats. Most days,instead of doing much needed repairs,he is working on his motorcycle. I pay $485/month and have to live like this. anyone else have bad landlord stories and what can I do about such bad living conditions,besides moving. end of rant. be seeing you

just cause someone drinks doesnt mean they dont pay their rent, and some drunks keep to theirselves, now if they are harrassing you or other tennants then i can see evicting them..

I'm not sure about where you live, but you can definitely call the city and the health department. If there are things you need fixed, you must request them to be repaired (to your landlord) in writing. Best to go certified. If they are not addresed within a certain amount of time (varies with each state/city) you can pay your rent to the local court, in an escrow account. Your landlord cannot evict you as long as you are within the law and your rights.

Most landlords do not expect such actions. It also brings in an investigation and things being up to code comes into play. If the guy is a slum lord as you say... he won't want interference.

But if you do this he'll find a reason to evict you. Or try.

Best to report him and move.

I lived in a place where the electrical was so outdated it would not support an air conditioner. We complained and my landlords response was to not cash our rent checks and evict us for nonpayment.

Another landlord tried to keep my security deposit for re-painting and carpet cleaning. I took them to court and won the whole thing back, plus they had to pay my court costs. Painting and carpet cleaning are considered normal wear and tear and cannot be withheld from a security deposit.

when the water lines are being worked on due to breakage somewhere they shut the water off... happened here for a day.. but they were fixing them.... who knows maybe the landlord was a dollar short cause the rent is sooooo cheap and he was late paying the bill..

$645 rents me a 2 bedroom townhouse. 2 bed upstairs, full bath.
Main floor, kitchen, living room, half-bath, attached single car garage.
Basement, unfinished, but painted, washer/dryer hook ups.
Gas heat and hot water. small deck-shared with neighbor. Sits on 1.5 acre, woods and farmland around me.

Its older, it has flaws but it works for me. Landlord lives about 5 mins away.

Apparently I'm paying way too much in rent.
