Last week I seen a woman who listed her profession as "Dokter". I'm wondering what accredited college she attended? Drunken state? University of lackagrammar? I don't really want to see a dokter like that. I'd rather see a "Doctor".

I don't get too goofy over it. I had a woman email me last week with a typo. She said she was a man seeking a man. I thought it was amusing. Because through her profile she kept declaring what type of woman she was and used the word woman a few times in the profile. I emailed her back asking if she was a man or a woman?

Well, what was she(he)?

....I got the expected reply of "I am all 100% woman through and through and can prove it. And thanks for showing me my mistake".

Yes there is. Many don't have a degree hanging on their wall. That does not mean they are stupid. But intelligence, amoung many other definitions Does have to do with the ability to learn and use of language. Some profiles, emails or posts on here look like they come out of a bad Deliverance movie.

One more rant an I'm done I swears

People who have a fancy college education need to get off they're so called superior high horse. If it wasn't fer the so called stoopid uneducated workin class this country wouldn't exist. Do u the college educated have any idea how much math it takes ta be a carpenter? Do u have any idea how much skill it takes to be a plumber, electrician, brick layer, or cement maker? There are tons of people in these trades who barely have a high school education but they do there jobs with skill an precision. It takes intelligence to do these jobs. My stepfather was an illiterate electrician but guess who called him when they had an electrical problem in their office or home? U guessed it! Mr. College Educated. Just because someone went to college an sat in a classroom an listened to professors lecture an took exams that doesn't make them superior to someone else who didn't.shades

*Rant over puhlease continue bout ur business*

Yeah there are some people that make you wonder about things like public education, future darwin awards recipients, and de evolution. Just having a profile is an over statement. Instead of "profile" it should be "amatuerfile".

Seems some mis read or something what I said about a degree. I said, Many DON'T have one and that does NOT mean they are stupid. And I agree about the working class, blue collar thing completely! I am strictly speaking of the ability to Spell...period. And for those that simply do not care??? I don't think that's it at all. How could one NOT care about how they come across? I am actually not terribly **** about this, make my fair share of typos. The spelling on here is and always has been horrible. It has and always will be discussed, and one can yawn til the cows come home all over a thread one doesn't like (I don't really see the point of that at all) but the fact remains, we all, have at one time shook our heads in dismay reading threads and/or emails. Hey, it's a good thread discussion if nothing else. flowerforyou

I seriously was not going to post in this thread, because most people couldn't care less about what I have to say on this subject, not to mention very few people will take any heart to a thread like this. I'm just viewed as a "grammar policeman". Nevermind EVERYBODY ELSE who feels the same way I do, let's just tear Keith apart for having his head on straight. You want to feel "singled out"? Try being me for a while.

It's quite obvious that most of the offenders/defenders on this thread are completely missing the point, which is also no surprise. It's not about the occasional typo. Everyone is susceptible to that. Nobody is completely perfect. I'm talking about the willful mangling, and/or simply not knowing any better, and the refusal to do anything about it to correct it. It DOES show a person's intelligence level (or lack thereof), and as mentioned before, these are skills that every person should've learned by the time they got out of elementary school (look up the very definition of the word, "elementary"). Legitimate learning disabilities aside, everybody should know this stuff, and it should just be second nature using it. Those who refuse then have the audacity to get upset because somebody else corrects them. Who is the violator?

I've also seen it mentioned that some (should be too many) people "just don't care", and THAT'S where the biggest problem lies. Those who don't care, and those that defend them. It only perpetuates the further decline of the proper use of the language.

"I have other, more important things to worry about." Oh, really? Like what? Such as? EVERYTHING has relevance! There is no single thing that is any more valid than another. It's only what's "important" to any given person that makes them THINK it's more important.

The bottom line is, it's become obviously much easier to make excuses than it is to make corrections. Take some responsibility for yourself, and have some pride in yourself, for God's sake! The written medium is all we have, especially on here. How many people would go out and buy/read a book that was filled with typos and grammatical errors? How many people would trust a doctor who couldn't spell? Even one letter off could give a person the wrong prescription. There is no excuse why anybody should have to stumble through reading five times (slowly!) what somebody else wrote just to figure out what they're attempting to say.

It's become too easy to bury this issue in the sand under the pretense of "political correctness". God forbid we should hurt anybody else's feelings! Wouldn't want them to have to go through 12 years of therapy because somebody corrected their spelling, now would we? Get over the excuses, get over the coddling of those who MAKE those excuses, and get over making excuses FOR them. Throw that "politically correct" crap away, and grow a pair!

Now, MY rant is over. I am ready for the blowback that I know is coming, but to borrow a phrase, "I just don't care."

LOOSE:
1 a: not rigidly fastened or securely attached b (1): having worked partly free from attachments <a loose tooth> (2): having relative freedom of movement c: produced freely and accompanied by raising of mucus <a loose cough> d: not tight-fitting

LOSE:
1 a: to bring to destruction —used chiefly in passive construction <the ship was lost on the reef> b: damn <if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul — Matthew 16:26(Authorized Version)>
2: to miss from one's possession or from a customary or supposed place
3: to suffer deprivation of : part with especially in an unforeseen or accidental manner

This seems to be the most commonly misused word pair. Definitions courtesy of http://www.merriam-webster.com/

Anybody else want to report on abuses of the King's English? All abuse reports should be anonymous as we are not picking on any individual, rather just looking at common mistakes. I'm sorry. I notice these things. Now I just wonder how many mistakes I made in this post.

The people you're trying to get through to are just not going to get it.

The people this is geared towards unfortunately are not going to care. Some are very adamant about spelling and grammar making no difference and they refuse to change.

I agree, though.
