Topic: Obama welcomes bill to regulate tobacco | |
---|---|
It also would require tobacco companies to reduce levels of nicotine in cigarettes. reduce the levels...reduce the price. If someone is used to a certain level of nictine...they will just buy more to get that level.....hmmmmmm more money spent? yup buy more cigs, pay more taxes I'mma look into other habits |

I can't stand when someone thinks they are doing me a 'favor' by making or trying to make a decision for me.

The legislation would give the FDA power to ban candy and fruit-flavored cigarettes, widely considered appealing to first-time smokers, including youths. kids have been smoking even before they made these It would prohibit tobacco companies from using terms such as "low tar," "light" or "mild," then how would they distinguish them from regular???? require larger warning labels on packages, and restrict advertising of tobacco products. ok...when my grandmother was young...they used to call them coffin nails. bigger labels aren't going to matter and restriction on advertising won't stop people from knowing about them It also would require tobacco companies to reduce levels of nicotine in cigarettes. reduce the levels...reduce the price. If someone is used to a certain level of nictine...they will just buy more to get that level.....hmmmmmm more money spent? Just chew some Nicorete gum to raise your level while you smoke. Works every time. |

I like that part. |

last I checked...I was a grown woman. none of what they propose will do any good. look back before there was any regulations. kids were smoking because they thought it was "cool" people have known smoking was very bad even back them. the whole package could be a warning label....do you think that will stop people????
me suspects foul play here.....money |

reduce the levels...reduce the price. If someone is used to a certain level of nictine...they will just buy more to get that level.....hmmmmmm more money spent? that sounds like something i said sorta so with this...are they going to cut the taxes down too???? yeah right they are going to regulate how much tobacco can go into each cig they are going to regulate how they can be made they are going to regulate what can go into them(that may be good thing) but those regs need regulators regulators cost money if something costs money someone has to pay and businesses just pass costs on to the customer so who pays the customer another tax blind |

that gum is expensive too lol
think about it...say they lower it in half the nicotine (just a number) people would smoke double to get the same level they have been used to. now some, it might help them to quit...but others...they will be spending double on what is already expensive |

so colors will replace words?????? but people still know what they represent. what a strange strange world we live in I asked for Saleem Light 100's. I get in the car and see Salem Gold 100's. I go back into the store and tell them that they gave me the wrong ones. They said that's what they are calling the lights now. Some other brands are doing it too. |

WASHINGTON – No more "light" cigarettes or candy-flavored smokes. Bigger, scarier warning labels. Fewer ads featuring sexy young smokers. Historic anti-smoking legislation sped to final congressional passage on Friday — after a bitter fight lasting nearly a half-century — and lawmakers and the White House quickly declared it would save the lives of thousands of smokers of all ages.
Even more important, they said, the measure could keep countless young people from starting in the first place. President Barack Obama, admittedly still struggling with his own nicotine habit, saluted passage of the bill, which he will soon sign. He said, "For over a decade, leaders of both parties have fought to prevent tobacco companies from marketing their products to children and provide the public with the information they need to understand what a dangerous habit this is." Specifically, the measure for the first time will give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate what goes into tobacco products, demand changes or elimination of toxic substances and block the introduction of new products. Under the legislation: • Cigarette packages will have warning labels that cover 50 percent of the front and rear. The word "warning" must be included in capital letters. • Any remaining tobacco-related sponsorships of sports and entertainment events will be banned, as will giveaways of non-tobacco items with the purchase of a tobacco product. A federal ban will be imposed on all outdoor tobacco advertising within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds. • Point-of-sale advertising will be limited to adults-only facilities, and remaining vending machines will disappear except in places restricted to adults. Retailers who sell to minors will be subject to federal enforcement and penalties. • Smokers, particularly the younger crowd, will find they can no longer buy cigarettes sweetened by candy flavors or any herb or spices such as strawberry, grape, orange, clove, cinnamon or vanilla. Cigarettes advertised as "light" or "mild," giving the impression that they aren't as harmful to health, will no longer be found on store shelves. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090612/ap_on_go_co/us_fda_tobacco |
