Taking Chances

They tried to tell me it's impossible
to find a one so right.
But I never lost hope

Because they didn't know what
was waiting just around the next turn.
Nor could have I, with the memory
of mistakes in my past.

I had almost given up.
Feeling some were meant to be alone.
Then there you were
There you were

A wounded rose before me.
Just as broken and secluded.
Fighting remembrances of what
might have been but was lost.

That small innocence beside you,
overjoyed and so bright.
And I could not relate

I saw that you were guarded.
Held captive in the fear of the unknown.
Subjected to the solitude you
chose by uncertainty.

But I held out my hand;
as was all I had to offer.
Of just myself
Just myself

Fear inside me lurking, wondering
if that would somehow be enough
for you to ever trust,
and maybe one day love.

But I too was frightened;
haunted by the ghosts of my past.
Afraid to just be me, my
opened hand began to tremble.

I closed my eyes and swallowed.
Thoughts about the risk screaming.
I tried to drown them out
To drown them out

Never knowing what tomorrow brings,
I watched my breathing race.
Then I smiled at you.
And you smiled at me.
