Honestly the whole pop scence pisses me off , its teaching my the
generation of what music really isn't. Like someone here said they can't
even read let alone pick up a guitar and strum it. I mean one of my good
friends didn't even know who the doors were until i introduced her to
them but if you were to ask her who snoop dogg was she would have gotten
it right, pop isn't even considered to be "music" in my books. I feel it
totally has made a mochery of what music really is.

Snoop Dogg is pop??? Poor guy, he's gotten too commercial now if he's
considered as pop.

Anyway, I detest pop, especially the boy band craze that thankfully
seems to have died down some. It rarely seems to be about the talent
with most pop acts, but rather the image and the marketing. it doesn't
really matter how badly a pop act sings since they'll be lip synced at
public apperances anyways...The big matter is that they look good, make
young fans scream and want to buy merchandise with their images
plastered all over them. -=x

I also detest pop music. And hate to admit that I caught myself humming
to some inane ditty by Ms. Spears or Ms. Steffani and want to hit my
head with a wrench. I do think there are different sorts of music fans
though. There are those who say they love music, and just like hear
tunes or beats and that's really what they consider loving music.

The second group are those who are somewhat fanatical about what like.
They actually get into lyrics, the band, maybe even their history. I
know I have traced some members from one band to another and their solo
career. I know the people who follow music in a deeper way usually
detest the Agularas (sp?) and the Ricky Martins of the world - but I
guess the have their place.

I refuse to consider pop music the killer of music though myself. I
refuse to believe money and greed can kill it. I listen to alternative
bands. I love Radiohead for example. I can't hear that on the radio
(well maybe Creep, which is far from a great example of their Genius).
My favorite older rock is the non-pop Pink Floyd - not Money, or Another
Brick in the Wall, but One of These Days or Time.

Also on the topic of alternatives I support local and new artists. I
listen to college radio and some of the Internet music sites. I buy
music from odd bands I hear. I try to put my money where my mouth is by
supporting what I think is good.

But I'm also guilty in that I do like some pop music and have supported
the less "intellectual" artist. Like your Green Day or you even No
Doubt. I just enjoyed the tunes - although Green Day actually has quite
a bit to say behind the thrashy pop exterior.

Was I making a point?

^^ I dont know if your saying Green Day is pop , i just have to say its
anything but, the band originally started off punk then a bunch of
preppie folk began to call it there own, i actually read something from
the band and them being pissed off in how there seeing kids in school
uniforms show up to concerts, and its funny how most people dont even
understand the reason for calling themselves green day.. huh

BOY IS THIS THE QUESTION OF THE DAY..
YES I AGREE,I PERSONALLY HAVE NO RESPECT FOR POP MUSIC
IT HOLDS NO MEANING FOR ME
AND I FEEL NO HEART IS PUT INTO IT
IT IS ONLY ENTERTAINMENT
REAL MUSIC WILL COME BACK
REAL MUSIC IS CREATED AND PLAYED

For a brief moment in time Kurt Cobain and Nirvana
smashed the pop machine into the smelly, rotten corpse
it really is. Kurt died, Nirvana ended, and Insync
rose from the grave of pop music to fuck up my ears and
take the joy of buying new cd's from me.
I also think that music hasn't been the same since
Jerry Garcia died.
I walk into a store hoping to find some new music
and I almost always walk away with a CD of one of
my old favorites.
I have purchased at least 3 copies of Nirvana's "Nevermind"
cos I lost it or played it til it could play no more.

Hi FairieDoFly - I was saying Green Day was pop. Pop is short for
Popular, and I think the charts support they are indeed popular. Now
are they pop like Insync, or Speers? No. Are they inane crap like
that? No. Pop music is what is generated by record sales, so if a
"punk" band sells a lot and reaches a large audiance, they are pop. ---
and this ticks off fans and bands alike. Cobain was one of the guys
that it drove nuts. Heck, the Beatles and Pink Floyd were driven insane
by going from a band playing at a club to a band playing at a stadium.
It disconnects the artist from what made them an artist. Money and
power that they never wanted. Green Day is one of the best bands I've
heard, and they are pop -- but what I think everyone is talking about
hear is "teeny bopper" music - as compared to pop music - but I suppose
this may be spliting hairs.

No insult was inteded to Green Day - but I'm sure they are insulted
every day by their success - this is a classic problem that causes lead
artist to kill themselves, do drugs, and throw their lives down the
drain. The ones with out a heart - Speers and the like - love being in
that spot. So be it. But I like what I like, so a band making money
won't make me thing they have "sold out".

Cheers,
Dave

Hey Will - I can dig the notion - Die pop die. But then again without
pop music I think the industry would die.

Support local and independant artists.

theres nothing wrong with music having mass appeal ...but just because a
girl is pretty shouldnt give her the right to a record deal ...i mean
you can polish a turd all you want but in the end its still a big stinky
turd you know....music is supposed to be about an artist self expression
...like me personaly i like to write instramental music .i dont like
tryin to bend my music around lyrics like that..and how often anymore do
you see the people who write the songs for pop stars recieve credit for
it..im sure they get a nice check out the deal but id rather have the
recognition for my art .

I think it is true that video killed the radio star. LOTS of much more
talented artists out there than what hit the top 40, but they don't have
the "look", so we never even hear of them. Not much real music even
being made any more. Have you noticed just how many "top" songs are
just rip off remixes of a song from 20-50 years ago? Cracks me up the
way kids think they are original.
