Damn clothes moths. I have put moth balls in there to no effect, the walls are already cedar lined. Every night a couple fly by me coming to or from the closet. I am sure, as they pass low for a "fly by", they are giving me the "moth".

Does anyone know how to get rid of these things? What do they eat?

Put out a pan of soapy water at night.....they are attracted to the iridescence of the bubble ..land and drown.

Seriously..it works.

How about if I set the pan on the floor and leave it in the closet? Do they need light in there for the pan trick to work?

If you have that many moths flying by- you have an infestation problem in your closet. Its time to clean that closet. Take all clothing out of the closet and wash them. Inspect your clothing. You will find one piece of clothing is the culprit of your infestation. Usually a wool sweater or wool socks or wool sport jacket. The moths favorite meal, home, defecation area is sheep wool or sheep, raccoon, beaver and/or other animal hair and felts. I had a moth problem and discovered a very expensive new sweater destroyed that was their home and lair. Thank god they didn't eat my 4 stetson hats which now have sealed cases. Once my closet of clothes was washed and ruined sweater removed, my problem was solved.

But out of all honesty moth balls do smell and your cloths will pick the smell as well.

Cedar-lined chests and closets are good for protecting clothes from clothes moths. It is said that the natural oils in cedar are repulsive to clothes moths. So long as you keep the cedar treated once every year or so, you shouldn’t have too many problems with clothes moths.

Natural lighting in closets and in basements will help keep moths away. This is true only for clothes moths, which prefer dark, warm, humid areas. Natural lighting is something they try to avoid, which is why they’re in your closet or basement in the first place. Try putting a high efficiency fluorescent light up in your closet and keep it turned on. This should discourage moths from making your clothes a place to raise their young.

One of the most effective ways to get rid of moths, especially clothes moths, is to regulate the humidity of each room in your home carefully. Clothes moths are most comfortable at a relative humidity of 70-80%, which means that strategically placed and regularly running dehumidifier will help your control moth populations in your home. Just make sure to set that dehumidifier to extra dry, and set it in your basement, or wherever else you happen to be storing clothes.bigsmile

If you don't wash and inspect your closet and all clothes you may not discover the nest in your wool blazer that has a few illegal alien moths that just moved in, and just remove the eaten sweater that you thought was the culprit. Pretty soon you will hear salsa music coming from your blazer and smell picante sauce. Another tip- take 2 T shirts and wash them in dawn liquid dishwashing soap. Put one on each end of your hanging clothes in your closet. Dawn liquid soap is isiotonic. It repels deer, rabbits, coyotes, moths, biting flies, and dirty smelly illegal aliens.

Next time I get a coyote in my closet......I'm going to remember this trick.

Call Jerry Springer. He gets everyone to come out of the closet.
