So, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator complex, intended to collide opposing beams of protons with very high kinetic energy. What does this mean?

Well basically what they are going to do is fire protons along the length of this 17 miles particle accelerator which goes is a huge circle through Switzerland and France and is deep underground.

Now why are they doing this? Well there is something in the universe that we suspect is there called "dark matter". In physics and cosmology, dark matter is hypothetical matter that does not interact with the electromagnetic force, but whose presence can be inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter. According to present observations of structures larger than galaxies, as well as Big Bang cosmology, dark matter and dark energy account for the vast majority of the mass in the observable universe.

It is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the last unobserved particle among those predicted by the Standard Model. The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would shed light on the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking, through which the particles of the Standard Model are thought to acquire their mass. It will also give us better insight into the nature of dark matter and dark energy.

Unfortunately the result of this test (many scientists theorize) may result in creating micro black holes. They are afraid that these black holes could consume the earth and destroy us all. On the positive side, the ferocity at which the black hole would consume us would happen in about a billionth of a second and destroy our whole solar system, so we won't even know it happened.

They already did the first test which is to fire protons in one direction, which was successful. The next test however will fire them in both directions which will result in the event the LHC was planned for. This test takes place sometime between September and December 2009.

So just in case the worst happens, I just want to say it was nice knowing all of you. On the bright side though, I'll never have to pay bills again! woo hoo!
