I'm presently unemployed, and NOT because I'm a slacker, too-

I work in the film industry here in L.A., which has been decimated on a number of fronts the last couple of years.

- We've had to contend with "runaway production" where slimy producers take their productions to other, cheaper locations just so that they can score more a bigger stash of coke to snort from. The dawning of "tax incentives" meant to start up and entice productions to those other locations has also essentially screwed things up, as it effectively amounts to legalized bribery- "film in OUR city/state/country, and well give you (up to HALF) the money you spent in taxes back!!!". And since most tv and film producers rank lower on the humanity scale than most ambulance-chasing attorneys, politicians, and used-car salesmen, you KNOW they're gonna go to those markets.

What also sucks is the one-sided nature with regard to who can and cannot work in those other areas, either- most places have their own laws as far as who can work in their city/state/country, which will effectively leave people like me out in the cold. However, when the situation is changed and a foreign company needs to film in L.A., they're allowed to with little in the way of friction. Hardly fair at all.

- The onset of "reality TV" has also essentially killed off the film and television industry out here, as NOT ONLY has it lowered the quality of programming to disgusting levels (if I ever hear of another episode of "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels" again, I'll explode), but it (as does "runaway production") lower the talent pool who produce and create shows. After all- today's reality TV producer will be tomorrow's motion picture producer, and if he or she doesn't have the skills to do the job in the first place, then how are they gonna step up to a REAL project?

- The continuing tail-spin that is the out-of-control revenue debacle in the State of California is also choking the industry here, as taxes are abnormally high here to the point that it's simply not advantageous for industry to do business here. And it's only getting worse too, as state government continues to grow while the industry continues to vamoose for other parts.

It truly is a sad state of affairs here in Cali. In fact, it makes you wonder if Cali will become another Michigan (especially as it pertains to Detroit).
