Topic: Any good combat air sims?

I have a couple already; Il-2 Sturmovik and Lock On: Flaming Cliffs. I'm looking for one comparable to Lock On with modern aircraft and moderate looking graphics, also helpful to have the modding community that Lock On has...was looking at Falcon, and probably will end up getting that, not that I will be able to do anything but drive around on the ground...but worth a shot. Anymore out there?

I haven't seen or heard of a good air combat sim in a LONG time. In fact, the last air combat sim I've played wasn't even an air sim at all- it was some Star Trek-based thing based in the "Next Generation" universe. It was one where they put you in a virtual captain's seat of a Federation-class starship.

Seems to be a dying breed. I can only mod the hell out of Lock On for so long.laugh

Have you played any of the Jane's series of combat flight sims? I'm not sure if they are still making them, but they are said to be some of the best for their time.

I've looked all over for Jane's, but I believe they went out of print awhile after EA bought them. Still have Longbow but I don't like chopper simulations.

Yep they are extinct...only arcade-ish stuff out now. ..try Battlestation Pacific or Tom Clancy's Hawkx...both very arcade and simplified for the console crowd, the graphics for both are awesome. Still, nothing like the old days with 10-15 sims out each year. I blame the console market monopolizing over video games. companies just don't want to do it. Sims are for people who doesn't represent the majority, so they don't think it's worth the money to develop it. So all we can do is wait and see if some enthusiastic programmer just makes one out of nowhere. Even the Lock-On game was developed by Russians.

Yeah. The days of Descent! I am missing flight sims too. I agree with Atlantis on why flight sims aren't made anymore.

I am not so sure I would want to be berried in flight controls of a very realistic sim, but I just miss the 3D flight.

I have the Falcon 4, but have never tried it. May-be I should. Now that Farcry is all done, and new one turned out to be a dud.

Looking for Jet sims, I have some old helo sims but I never could get into the helicopter sims. I just ordered Wings Over Vietnam with Yankee Air Pilot v2, not quite as modern as I would like but will have to do.

I have Falcon 4 as well, but I could never get off the ground in that sim.laugh

Yeah! We need a new Descent game! The first two RAWKED!!! The third one... well... not so much.

There were a couple of attack helicopter sims out there too at one point, like Commanche 4 which was admittedly a little more arcadey than hardcore sim. But it would seem that even those games are out of fashion nowadays.

D3 sucked. Somehow Interplay just have lost the edge. Same with Free Space.

I talked to many people from Interplay at that time, and some of them did say it is incredibly hard to keep staying on the razor thin edge of what human mind perceives as interesting. They did they best they could, but they just could not sense where is that elusive edge any longer.

Also an incredible success of Descent II, brought a lot of money to the company. With money, came more sophisticated career managers, who knew nothing about making a good game, but a lot about holding their office.

Too bad. The added concept of guided missiles and thief to counterbalance the hoarding instinct did make the D2 just perfect.

Well... Interplay had a bunch of internal problems going on, and most of them had nothing to do with the people coding the game. As you put it, a bunch of people ended up being put into power in that company who were less about cranking out good games and more about keeping to the bottom line. In the end, it's that bean-counter mentality that essentially ruined Interplay.

With that said, I'd STILL like to see a legitimate new DESCENT game, as it was a really cool concept.

And it wouldn't be surprising to find that helicopter sims would be difficult, being that helicopters are difficult birds to fly all together. Commanche 4 was probably the easiest of the helicopter sims to play, being that it had some rather rudimentary controls.

Unfortunately, it would appear that Novalogic (the devs who created that game) have gone under, as has 3D Realms, which just did so very recently.

Imagine D4 being completed using an engine as powerful as CryEngine, for example?

God, I wish someone did it.drinker drinker

Yeah. DESCENT using a modern rendering engine, whether it be the DOOM4 engine, or the Source engine used in Half-Life 2 would be uber-cool. That goes especially with all the neato-torpedo lighting and shadow effects and stuff, too.

If there was EVER a game that needed to be re-made, forget DOOM or some of the other tired IPs out there- remake DESCENT! bigsmile

Of course, simply laying it all out on a new engine will look great, but will it be truly exciting? I think not, you'll quickly recognize an old friend and will be quickly tired with it.

What would you add or remove?

My list:

- A capability to get out of the craft, to do some FPS in order to score some gadgets, such as when you need batteries (pitch black style), or when you need to move the broken latch door by operating a switch board manually...

- autopilot along a pre-programmed route, so that you may want to take a time off, doing other stuff, like in real life, only to be awaken to a trouble...

- ability to trade and change your neutrality status from a legal trader to a fugitive (like in elite). As a legal, you'd be able to pass through armed check point gates, leading to a quicker routes, but as a fugitive you'd be clanking away trough the maintenance tunnels.

- ability to load your goods manually in a cargo compartment, so that you could try to hide some stuff, and when on a guarded gateway you'd be randomly searched, but again, depending on your behavior, the search could be only a papers check, a closer look, or a complete dig down, so if uncovered transporting an illegal item, you'd have to FPS your way into the craft, and then blast the guards and the gates to get out.

- my most desired wish is to keep the ability to play along with a friend, not as enemies, but as buddies, against robots and game characters. Too many games lack this very exciting mode.

- The FPS thing kind of works, but so many games have that kind of element in gameplay nowadays that you'd have to come up with some ways to expand on it. Just going out and finding keys or throwing a switch to open an un-openable door just isn't gonna cut it anymore.

- The auto-pilot business would actually be better served as a kind of waypoint thingy, so that you don't get friggin' lost trying to navigate around a given area. This could help beginning players who would surely get all vertigo'ed out trying to get back somewhere.

- The neutrality status and hiding of cargo would probably work more for multiplayer than for single-player mode, as you were never confronted by any factions other than the compromised robots in the tunnels. Besides- this was already done in FarCry2, where you had to do the whole "switching allegiance" thingy between several different factions.

However- you COULD add an element where the factions are in essence different groups of robots, maybe where one group is affected differently from their virus code than another group. Heck- you could add a quasi-RPG element where you (if your skills are good enough) hack into either single or whole groups of robots to do your bidding for you.

I'd also add an element where you could "bot-jack" enemy bots so that you can (at least temporarily) gain their strengths and stuff. It would kind of add some strategy to the game play, as you'd have to use the abilities of the bot you captured to your advantage. It'd also work pretty well in multiplayer mode, too.

I've got a bunch of flight sims from over the years, the two I like the best and play often are Microsoft combat flight sim/battle for Europe and Red Baron Arcade

I like the WWI and WWII flight sims myself

There is one out now that I am thinking of getting based on the movie "Flyboys". Has anyone checked that one out by any chance?

I was looking at Microsoft's combat flight sims, but I have IL-2 which is from what I've seen of the two the better one. Since I have IL-2 I really don't have the desire for another WWII era flight sim. WWI looks interesting, but again I'm leaning more towards moder flight sims like Falcon...which apparently only 4 or 5 exist anymore since Jane's went out.

Not what you asked, but I used to play a massively multiplayer online WWII fighter sim game called Fighter Ace. You can play it offline, but the real fun is flying with friends and squadrons to take over airfields and supply lines. Many different WWII aircraft modeled with their different flight characteristics and armaments. There can be 100 or more people flying with or against you at any time.

Great fun. There is a subscription required to fly online. Not sure if there's a cost to download the game itself, which can be flown offline.
