if you sound it out it sounds like it should be spelled "definately"...maybe that is possible reason Mitch

Finally someone answered my question. Thanks. That makes a certain amount of sense since it is the most common misspelling of the word. However, it still does not explain the endless variations I've seen.

Because of all the other languages that have had an influance on English, mastering English spelling is harder that most other languages.

because I don't have a dictionary close by and the spell correction for fire fox doesn't give me the correct spelling .So I go with whatever these fingers punch on the keyboard. Is it my fault it can't spell either?

Go to "dictionary.com" laugh

I haven't noticed it with definitely very much.

The misspelling that drives me the most crazy (maybe cause it's not a mispelling but rather a misusage) is 'loose' instead of 'lose'.

I make typos all the type. Right now I have a dirty keyboard and the keys aren't able to be fully depressed unless I bang really hard, so some appear to be missing, haha. Or because I type really fast, some letters get transposed (but I still make an attempt to edit).

Some people think I'm anal about spelling but, to me, good grammar and accurate spelling are as important in making a good presentation of yourself as is personal grooming and dress.

I won't go after people correcting them - I don't care how joe blow speaks and writes. However, if they are full of themselves and/or poking fun at another, you can rest assured that I'll be right in there tearing apart their sentence structure!

Oh, for the record, I think 'rhythm' is the hardest word to spell correctly. I'm not even gonna double check it and see if someone discovers whether I spelled it right or wrong, haha.

Oh, one more thing - I DO look up a word in the dictionary if I think I've got it wrong, either the spelling or the meaning. You'd be surprised at how repetitiveness and memory are related.

not definately or defanitely or deffinately or definetly or definateley any one of 20 other variations of this word I've seen on the internet.

Why does this word seem to be so difficult to spell correctly? It is definitely used often enough...

spock Please do not get offended. I'm just asking a question.

Because all the looser's who are looking for a sweatheart dont have enough sence too learn how to right any better then they did when they were for.

*sighs* This was NOT MEANT as a critique on the mangling of the English language. It was a very specific question about one word. I've noticed this word misspelled even by self-professed intelligent and well read people.
