I assume he meant the collapse of our economy. I just don't think that if the collapse of our economy happens the rest of the worlds economy will survive. If it happens, once it starts the whole world is going down with us... economically

which i think thats what the mayans believed

Actually there is a plantetary alignment that takes place only once every... 3000? years that will happen in 2012. That's why the date is so specific and known. It is the date the mayan calendar ends. Mayans believed we were ruled by the stars so it's unclear if they believed the planetary alignment would bring physical change or change within humanity.

Don't tell me you're going to start spout this Sumerian planet x shlte. None of the ancient cultures predicted anything with any specific date, but every culture has some sort idea about how the world will end, but it all broad, unspecific, metaphorical mumbo jumbo. The world is now, what is happening now is the result of our modern day actions and are not preordained.

while reading about the Mayans and others in history is fine, it's still history and not now. People didn't have the science we have today, I think we rely too much on the past and not enough on now and the future.

No not at all, of course you were not here in the beginning of this, and you didn't obviously didn't bother to look to see, that I said I don't buy into it just find it interesting. I agree completely that the road we are on is from our actions and if our actions don't change neither will the road we are on.

As for the Mayans and their prediction... You should do some research there first too, it is the only one of all those dooms day predictions where it is a very specific date. The Mayan Calendar is well known and rather accurate... until 2012 where it ends.

the mayans were unbelievable and what they left beyond austounding.

but still. I dont exactly think we are headed for a third world country. although things are bad. and who knows what will happen.

we are all aligned together.........kinda like what happens in the solar system in 2012 ( a proven prophecy????)

Im sure there is a chic in china. or japan. or volcnic iceland that feels the same way I feel.

Actually I don't really see us as a 3rd world eather. Either we will get through this or the entire world economy will go down with us.

I have done a lot of studying. Apparently you have studied only the conspiracy theories and not the actual facts and science. I study the science and then read the conspiracy theories to see if they hold water. I'd recommend studying the science of Mayan calendar.

Done some reading on both as well. Got something specific you'd like to point out. Most, admittedly not all, of what I've seen points to reading that calendar and that date. Enough for me to enjoy the coincidence anyway.

Question

What do you make of this theory that the Earth will be in direct alignment with the center of the Milky Way in December of 2012? There are many websites which list a series of events in our solar system, leading up to the alignment which will cause a catastrophic change in the Earth¹s rotation. I went to your Solar System Simulator at http://space.jpl.nasa.gov/ (Which is really cool by the way) and typed in a bunch of these dates. It looked to me like the Earth was still intact. Is this alignment with the center of the galaxy even provable?

You are correct, there is no planetary alignment in December 2012. As to "alignment with the center of the Milky Way" that is a meaningless phrase. It may sound scientific, but it is devoid of content. To put it bluntly, these claims on the Internet of alignments and catastrophe in December 2012 are lies. If more people were like you and checked out these crazy claims, we would all be better off.

. . .
But scholars are bristling at attempts to link the ancient Maya with trends in contemporary spirituality. Maya civilization, known for advanced writing, mathematics and astronomy, flourished for centuries in Mesoamerica, especially between A.D. 300 and 900. Its Long Count calendar, which was discontinued under Spanish colonization, tracks more than 5,000 years, then resets at year zero.

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

Part of the 2012 mystique stems from the stars. On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time," Joseph writes.

But scholars doubt the ancient Maya extrapolated great meaning from anticipating the alignment — if they were even aware of what the configuration would be.

Astronomers generally agree that "it would be impossible the Maya themselves would have known that," says Susan Milbrath, a Maya archaeoastronomer and a curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History. What's more, she says, "we have no record or knowledge that they would think the world would come to an end at that point."

University of Florida anthropologist Susan Gillespie says the 2012 phenomenon comes "from media and from other people making use of the Maya past to fulfill agendas that are really their own."
