and you can't talk about the Alamo without bringing up Goliad

the battle cry is "Remember the Alamo and remember Goliad"

To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World:

Fellow citizens & compatriots—I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna—I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man. The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken—I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch—The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country—Victory or Death.

William Barret Travis

yeah, there were a couple of battles of Goliad. But eventually Fannin surrendered his command. He was told that they would be held and paroled after the war. But Santa Ana ordered all prisoners to be executed so the next day they were all shot. About 400 men (roughly about the same time as the Alamo battle)

you are right quiet..

Travis' Slave, Joe
William Travis brought his slave, Joe, with him into the Alamo. Joe fought valiantly and became the only adult male survivor of the battle, though he was shot and bayonetted during the attack. A U.S. army officer later heard Joe's story of the assault. Joe never wrote his own account or told it to a journalist or historian, but the officer retold Joe's story from memory in a letter written in May 1836:

One of Congressman Crockett's speeches to Congress was reported in Davy Crockett’s Almanac, of Wild Sports in the West, Life in the Backwoods, & Sketches of Texas:

"Mr. Speaker.

"Who-Who-Whoop — Bow-Wow-Wow-Yough. I say, Mr. Speaker; I ve had a speech in soak this six months, and it has swelled me like a drowned horse; if I don’t deliver it I shall burst and smash the windows. The gentleman from Massachusetts [Mr. Everett] talks of summing up the merits of the question, but I’ll sum up my own. In one word I’m a screamer, and have got the roughest racking horse, the prettiest sister, the surest rifle and the ugliest dog in the district. I’m a leetle the savagest crittur you ever did see. My father can whip any man in Kentucky, and I can lick my father. I can outspeak any man on this floor, and give him two hours start. I can run faster, dive deeper, stay longer under, and come out drier, than any chap this side the big Swamp. I can outlook a panther and outstare a flash of lightning, tote a steamboat on my back and play at rough and tumble with a lion, and an occasional kick from a zebra.

"To sum up all in one word I’m a horse. Goliah was a pretty hard colt but I could choke him. I can take the rag off-frighten the old folks-astonish the natives-and beat the Dutch all to smash-make nothing of sleeping under a blanket of snow and don’t mind being frozen more than a rotten apple.

"Congress allows lemonade to the members and has it charged under the head of stationery-I move also that whiskey be allowed under the item of fuel. For bitters I can suck away at a noggin of aquafortis, sweetened with brimstone, stirred with a lightning rod, and skimmed with a hurricane. I’ve soaked my head and shoulders in Salt River, so much that I’m always corned. I can walk like an ox, run like a fox, swim like an eel, yell like an Indian, fight like a devil, spout like an earthquake, make love like a mad bull, and swallow a Mexican whole without choking if you butter his head and pin his ears back."

One of Crockett's sayings, which were published in almanacs between 1835 and 1856 (along with those of Daniel Boone and Kit Carson), was:

“ Always be sure you are right, then go ahead "

"and swallow a Mexican whole without choking if you butter his head and pin his ears back."

Ben, a former American slave who acted as cook for one of Santa Anna's officers, maintained that Crockett's body was found in the barracks surrounded by "no less than sixteen Mexican corpses", with Crockett's knife buried in one of them.

He was almost as mean as a Tarheel!

I think this is all so fascinating. Thank you for sharing your input on the history of the Alamo.

I was thinking about creating a wild west thread, but a bit different then most would have them.

I am looking for "Poker" players that like the game of Texas Hold'em.

I will be the dealer throughout the game.

You on the other hand are the player representing a famous outlaw, marshall, frontiers man, or who ever you would like to represent.

It can be Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill, etc. etc.

You start off with a 100 coins.

Now I start the game at a certain time each day where everyone can meet and we play cards. Now how it is done is I email you the cards you receive that I pull from my deck at home. This way no one knows what you have. You then on the thread can tell me how many cards you discard and how much you bet and so forth.

The winner of course gets the money.

To earn money (50 coin per day) one simply has to post at least once per day a interesting event of the past. If it be the Alamo, Tombstone, Dodge City events or a simple fact about what cowboys did back then. One can also post up a person such as the ones I described above.

Cowboys aren't restricted. One can also post up about natives, slavery, or even wars of the past that changed the shift of America.

If you are interested then pick the person you want to represent by posting in here and later on tonight we can begin a game of cards (testing) it until we get it right to make it fun and interesting.

What do I hope to gain from this?

Friendships, good laughs, history lessons, and experience on card gamesdrinker

To play a game of cards I need at least 2 players each time. I can go up to 8 players per day. I think that is the max right or is it more??

Well here your face won't be seen! lol

So this would be interesting to see who makes a ton of coins and at the same time alot of history will be posted to enhance our understanding of how it all happened back then, or at least see how it could have been.

Think about it and if you change your mind then don't hesitate to tell me who you will represent if you were suddenly time warped back in time.drinker
