Elwood was founded in 1854, and incorporated as a village in 1869. In the early 1940's, the federal government required land for troop training during World War II. A location in Elwood was chosen and became Joliet Arsenal. Arsenal construction played an important role in the development of Elwood and brought about 175 people into the area. In 1942, an explosion at the arsenal killed 42 workers. Elwood's population is now 2,300, and development is still occurring.

On May 8, 1988, a tornado touched down about three miles (5 km) north of Elwood. The tornado uprooted large trees and even heavily damaged a few homes and pole buildings.

Elwood is located along historic U.S. Route 66 and its successor I-55.

Two major fires have taken place in Elwood, Il.

The first was on August 26,1995. On that day,the fire station caught fire and burnt to the ground.

(YES, You read it right, Our Firehouse burnt down!!)

The Bills Inn fire occurred on May 5, 2008. The bar was considered a Landmark by the Illinois Historian Society.

Elwood is also the first name of the fictional character Elwood Blues in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers. His brother (Joliet) Jake's name comes from the larger town of Joliet, IL. (Where Fear lives).

I live in the Washington D.C. area. It has to be one of the most diverse areas in the nation. Do you want Taco Bell or Ethiopian food? Take your choice and there are atleast two of every restaurants here, no matter what ethnic background. Not to mention that on any given day you can run into a redskin, capital, wizard or national. OH yeah, having the gov't near by helps as well!

My hometown is Jonesboro Arkansas:

Home of the first black Miss America - Debbye Turner (I actually went to school with her. She's very nice and very intelligent.)

Home of the Westside School Shootings in which Andrew Golden and Mitchell Johnson shot 15 women and young girls. Five died. Andrew's grandmother was my mail carrier at the time. Oddly enough, Westside schools were considered the town's best schools. Everyone wanted to live in the Westside school district. I was at work when I heard the news on the radio. And I, like all other residents here, could not believe that they were talking about OUR Westside school. Surely it was happening in some other town in some other state, but NOT here.

The Craighead County courthouse in Jonesboro held the trials of the three West Memphis teens who were found guilty of torturing, mutilating and murdering three youngs boys.

Home of the Arkansas State University Indians who recently changed their name to the "Red Wolves" in response to NCAA sanctions.
