What Michelle Obama did was disrespectful. It was a display of blatant disregard for protocol and was a slap in the face of the hosting nation. NOBODY touches the queen like that. That is the way of the land.

There's supposed to be someone in the administration that briefs them on proper protocols in foreign nations. Either that or there really is no regard for them.

Andrew,

The article said: "that the smiling queen strayed slightly from protocol and briefly wrapped her arm around the first lady in a rare public show of affection." Then Mrs. Obama reciprocated.

Well I apologize if it was the other way and if the clip I saw was cut off or something, but it appeared michelle obama made the first move. again, i apologize if i'm wrong, but what i saw could indeed be viewed as disrespectful

I'm going to look for the video.

Even if she did make the first move instead of the Queen, so what? Is the Queen better than the President's wife? Why would it be ok for the queen to hug or put her arm around Michelle but not the other way around. That's bizarre to me.

in the US, maybe not. but as guests, we must adhere to their customs. not touching the queen first is one of those "rules" we must observe.

If it was the other way around and Michelle Obama initiated it, yes it would have been wrong. You can't understand it because you didn't grow up in that society and tradition, period. And no, a queen is not equal with a president's wife. But since the queen initiated, and allowed, then it's fine.

The Obamas gave the Queen and the Duke a cool personalized iPod containing a video of their visit to Virginia and Washington, DC, in 2007.

The royal couple displayed their generation gap by countering with (yawn) the official framed photo of themselves. What, not even a digital photo frame? Jeez ...

Shortly afterward, the women were standing next to each other joking about their height difference, which is considerable. As the pair moved closer, the Queen put her hand on the waist of Mrs Obama, who returned the embrace around the Queen's shoulders for a few moments as they chatted.

But according to "Inside Edition," not exactly the official curator of modern decorum, this affectionate display between the nations was not a major breach of protocol. No WWIII yet.

“It’s obvious that it was a mutual sign of affection and appreciated between the Queen and Michelle Obama,” a spokesperson for the Queen told "Inside Edition." “There is no offense. The reception was an informal occasion. There's no breach of protocol.”

Complete with Photo of the embrace!

No your absolutely right, I don't understand that at all, and probably never will. To me all men are equal, but some for obvious reasons thing they are above all others even about the simplest of gestures. Sorry that just rubs me the wrong way.

Michelle Obama, is the national star, government issue. Young and black to the queen’s old and white, Michelle and the queen were nevertheless ideally matched in their studied ordinariness. It was all quaintly, reassuringly, hellzapoppin' cheesy. Mrs. O touched the Queen. She gave her the damn iPod. Jamie Oliver cooked for everyone. Mrs. O kicked Sarah Brown's butt in the wardrobe department. Carla Bruni didn't turn up because she couldn’t compete with Michelle.

And, about all this, everybody went crazy.
