After being on this site for more than a year and having previously been on similar sites, I've come to believe that this is about 90% fantasy. Certainly the occasional reality slips through the cracks even if it is accidental.

Loo, just curious as to why you believe this? While there is certainly a level of fantasy I have met some really awesome people that appear very real to me.

It's entertaining sometimes but most of the time it's a waste of time. I just pop in to chat & joke with my friends such as yourselfdrinker

I have many reasons. Without being too specific people will show interest without knowing me or knowing why. They create images that have no root in reality. These images are based on words from someone sitting behind a computer. Many of these very same people would not even acknowledge my existence in the real world. Sure sometimes the fantasy can escape this little box, but it's the rare exception.

I could say the exact same thing about my "real" dating experiences out in the world.

Even dating teachers teach "almost" deception in their dating classes. It is like "get your foot in the door" before you unload your life onto someone else. I disagree with this philosophy but I do understand the idea of "selling" yourself but the deception, even though small, is still there.

When I first started talking on dating sites, I couldn't believe it was possible for someone to lie about anything - their age, their weight, their marital status, their occupations, their everything and anything.

I got fooled once and, based on all the other stories I read about - from people I know and trust in real life - there are many people who are fake, and live a life of a lie online.

Therefore, my rule of thumb is to think that everyone is a phony until I am proven otherwise.

However, I have had many enjoyable conversations, both in private email and in the forums, with said fakes and I've decided that I won't allow them to jade me to such a point that I refuse to believe in someone's realness.

I've met a few from these sites that are indeed as advertised, but the large percentage have not been who they claim.

I've been ruminating on this ever since I read a thread the other day where several people thought an accidental meeting of another member in the "real" world would be awkward and embarrassing.

The reason I keep coming back to is because upon meeting, the fantasy bubble would have to burst.

I would love to accidentally meet someone from this site. But I would have to be in Oregon, Ohio, Texas, etc. Because apparently none of them live in Virginia. Anyway, the people I have met and enjoy, if they lived close, I would have friends to hang out that' aren't married and feeling sorry for me.laugh

I didn't see that thread, so maybe I misunderstood your OP.

I doubt I'd feel awkward at all, or even slightly embarassed. However, it depends on the person involved and the situation as to whether I'd find myself talkative or not. Certain people bring out the chattiness and with others I've a shy streak.

I was in that thread, too & posted that very question: Why would you be embarrassed to be online?

I guess it's all about trusting your gut feeling about an individual... I've met people from here & another site...& thank goodness haven't been disappointed or fooled...yet.

No you did not misunderstand my OP. Seeing the thread only gave me more confirmation of what I already believe.

While there are few exceptions I can categorically claim that most women on this site love to live the fantasy of their youth when they had good few people chasing after them. As such they collect Emails and claims of people looking at their profiles and they seem to get a high on that
