NoGames,

What inconvenience is there when you turn your computer off at night?
I've done it every night since I've had a computer.

I am not persuading you to leave it on. I could not care less what you do with your energy or devices.

I, on the other hand, am being persuaded to make a change in my act, that creates no benefit for me, but only a benefit in the minds of some people, who believe that:

1) there is some kind of shortage of energy (and not a shortage of freedom to extract it).
2) that the shortages are best eliminated by rationing (and not free markets).
3) that an environmental pollution can be solved by consciousness (instead, it will run into "the tragedy of commons").

How can one refuse to have fun with that? (I also dump used engine oil straight into the ground in public parks, - they are mine too, right?).

If you want the $100, you then go ahead and turn your comp. off. It's that easy.

laugh

I've GOT that $100, but I'll also have the $100's others are flushing down the toilet!!

drinker

You could, if you could figure out a way to capitalize on this, and offer folks $50 saving without inconvenience, so that you can keep the other $50.

Do you leave yours on all night?

I don't believe that you dump used engine oil in a park.

Inconvenience? It is busy doing work. I don't want to stop it.

Even if it wasn't, why do it? I still have to click on a shutdown button, and it will harm the drives, possibly destroying data.

Public parks are no ones property. It is not a crime to damage a non-property. It is not for my private use, so there is no disadvantage to my bottom line. (I wouldn't do it on a private property, as that would be not right). It is cheaper than to drive to the collection point. How much oil do I have to dump, before there will be any kind of personal disadvantage to me? A lot. I'll probably move before it becomes unusable as a park, and even then, there is no personal expense to restore it. There might be a little bit of tax, but everyone will pay the tax too, even though they didn't dump their oil there. So, that's nice, meaning that I'll probably save more on gas, and vehicle depreciation, that I will have to pay in my fair share of taxes.

So, there you have it, a saving versus spending, a convenience versus inconvenience.

Is there any logical reason not to do it?

Yes there is a logical reason...it is against the law. Would be determined by local and state statues as to wither or not it is simply a misdemeanor or a felony.

It is not a logical reason. It is a conditionally logical reason.

There is no such natural law. As for the law of men, a law is only a law if you can enforce it. If you were right, I think you might agree, then there would be no murders, no drug trafficking, and definitely no speeding.

I control how large my electric bill will be, no one else, so I shut it down to save money. Conserve, ration, what ever the heck anyone wants to call it.

I would never dump my oil in a public park, just because it was mine too. I am hoping you are pulling a leg or two here, NoGames.

If you are not then you are the reason the government has to make laws and construct signs telling you what is not acceptable. Does everything have to benefit you, Nogames. Could you not do it simply because it's wrong to polute the park?

If I misunderstood please feel free to correct me.

Well, said, Boo. People that do things like that are the reasons that they make these laws. It's also your park, my park, the children's park.

Im for conserving energy!

I turn my computer off every night. Sometimes off and on three or four times a day!

It wont hurt your computer.

I find it funny when people talk about damaging their computer by turning it off when these same people generally replace their computers every 3-5 years anyway. (To keep up with the latest and greatest...) Like they're really intending to keep them around for 100 years or something... laugh

Good point.
I agree, it is pretty dumb to turn off the computer in an effort to prolong the life of what is to be thrown out in a year. (for those that believe that turning it off prolongs it's usable life).

"Going green gets you laid with dumb chicks! It makes them "feel good".

That's non-sense.

No, it isn't. It may-be a non-sense in the way that it shouldn't happen, but it actually does.

Dumb girls have no brain, only emotions. Emotions tell them that "green" is good, without any logical confirmation. (This whole board (lots of smart people) had failed so far, to provide a logical reason of why should one save energy. What can we expect from a girl?

If you confirm this, by saying that you're all "green", you get laid.
Worked for me, when in a pinch.

leaving PCs on or turning them off is an old argument

if you leave em on there is power consumption and mechanical devices like fans wear out faster

if you turn em off there is the thermal shock to solid state devices on/off=hot/cold and they wear out faster

I leave mine on all night so it can run a long ass virus scan while I'm asleep

Which one is cheaper to fix?
