Topic: So, You Say "There is No GOD?" | |
---|---|
Question: "What does the Bible mean when it says “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’”?"
Answer: Both Psalm 14:1 and Psalm 53:1 read, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” Some take these verses to indicate that atheists are stupid, i.e. lacking intelligence. However, that is not the meaning of the Hebrew word translated “fool.” In this text, the Hebrew word is nabal which refers more to a “moral fool,” e.g., someone without morals. The meaning of the text is not “Unintelligent people do not believe in God.” Rather, the meaning of the text is “Immoral people do not believe in God.” Many atheists are very intelligent individuals. It is not intelligence, or a lack thereof, that leads a person to reject belief in God. It is a lack of morals that leads a person to reject belief in God. People do not reject the idea of there being a Creator Being. Rather, people reject the idea of there being a Creator Being who demands morality from His creation. In order to clear their consciences and relieve themselves of guilt, people reject the idea of God as the only source of absolute morality. Doing so allows atheists to live however they choose—as morally or immorally as they desire—with no feelings of guilt for their refusal to be accountable to God. Several prominent atheists have admitted this. One famous atheist, when asked what he hopes to accomplish through atheism, declared that he wants “to drink as much alcohol and have sex with as many women as possible.” Belief in a divine Being is accompanied by a feeling of accountability and responsibility toward that Being. So, to escape from the condemnation of conscience, which itself was created by God, one must deny the existence of God in order to deny the moral pull of the conscience. This is not to say that all atheists are immoral people. Many atheists live relatively moral lives. The point of “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’” is that a lack of evidence of His existence is not the true reason people reject belief in God. People reject belief in God due to a desire to live free of the moral constraints He requires and to escape the guilt that accompanies the violation of those constraints. “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them … men are without excuse … their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools … Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie” (Romans 1:18-25). LINK; http://www.gotquestions.org/fool-heart-no-God.html (Used by permission, 'gotquestions.org'.)[/] |

I believe in the "idea of God"...ie a higher power.
Just not the "biblical sense of God". Sorry. I refuse to believe that God could be that cruel and judgemental. |

Awesome Post!
A song popped in my head while reading it. "There is a God" 33 miles There’s a beauty to the dawn, a rhythm to the rain A silence in the soul that I just can’t explain There’s a breath of life I breathe, a beating in my heart A magnificence, a scary sense of what lies past the stars Beyond what we can see behind the mystery I know that it could only be There is a God; this is the proof That all around the evidence is speaking the truth From the center of my soul to the edge of the universe Creation is crying out believe it or not There is a God There’s a dept that has been paid, a grace that I’ve been shown A hope that I’ve been given that I have never known There’s a love that conquers darkness a piece of life in me There’s a life that’s not just here and now but for eternity Beyond what we can see behind the mystery I know that it could only be that I believe it; I believe it There is a God I can feel it; I can feel it There is a God And the more I find the less I need to see I’ve never been so sure, so sure of anything |

"So, to escape from the condemnation of conscience, which itself was created by God, one must deny the existence of God in order to deny the moral pull of the conscience."
I do not disbelieve in god to escape the condemnation of my conscience, I disbelieve simply because there isn't enough evidence to support such a being. And the bible is so full of illogical fallacies, that it's like reading a fairy tale. The Old Testament is particularly horrific. Religion was established for one reason, control of the masses. |

I'm totally convinced that the Bible is not the word of any God. This has nothing to do with a choice of belief based on 'faith'. It has to do with the fact that the Bible contains so many contradictions and behaviors that I personally would not even attribute to a 'good-natured' God. I don't believe in a male chuavinistic God who sends mixed messages to people telling them on the one hand to judge their neighbors and murder heathens (anyone who disagrees with the Bible) and would then turn around and send his only begotten Son to denounce those very teachigns thus disagreeing with the Bible! I reject the Bible, because quite frankly I don't believe that God is that stupid. So that's my reason for rejecting it. I simply don't believe that God is stupid. It has nothing at all to do with not wanting to be constrained by the bigotry of an ancient male chauvinistic society that used God as an excuse to murder heathens. Although I confess that I wouldn't want to be part of that cult either. Also, I think the Christians are extremely arrogant to believe that they have cornered the market on the word "God". The "God of Abraham" isn't any more valid than the Zeus, the "God of the Greeks". Or any other deity invented by men. I like to believe (on faith) that we are indeed spiritual beings. In that sense and in that sense only I believe in "god". I don't even like to capitalize the word in that context because in this way of thinking "god" is in all of us. I'll never believe in an egotistical being who lusts to be the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and have every knee bow and every tongue confess that's he's the most powerful bully in the universe lest he prove it to them by casting them into an eternal hell fire. That picture of a jealous egostical "God" is truly a sorrowful picture of a God. As far as morals are concerned, according to what I've read in the Bible I have higher morals than Jesus. But then I personally don't believe that the people who wrote the Bible have any right to speak for the man named Jesus. So I can't really say what Jesus was like and neither can anyone else. Or whether he even actually existed. Jeanniebean and others hold that Jesus never existed and that he was an entirely fictional character. I tend to believe that there was some person who existed and gave rise to these rumors the character of Jesus may have been modled after that person. That person may well have been crucified by the Romans at that request of the Jews for blaspheme. That much may very well be true. However, I've become increasingly convinced that the stories of the gospels could not have possible taken place in history they way they are described in the Bible. It simply isn't possible. If those stories had existed as they are actually stated in the Bible then there would have been much mention of this man named Jesus in all manner of history in the region. The fact is that didn't happen. Thus the stories can't possible be true. At the very best they are gross exaggerations of far lesser events. Trying to claim that people who don't believe in the Bible reject it based on moral values is truly insulting to those of us who reject it simply because it is grossly unreasonable and quite frankly utterly stupid. Many so-called Christians actually use it to support bigotry against all manner of people not the least of which are "non-believers" by claiming that non-believers have lesser moral values. That's a bigotry right there! |

I must be a mingling fool then, cuz I say in my heart and I say it outloud... THERE IS NO GOD. God is a non-material personal being, self-conscious and self-determining... God has no image that can be "Seen" by the human eye... but creation points to His existence... John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: I Timothy 6:16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: I Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. His Son, Jesus - The Anointed One, gave testimony to His existence and His desire to be sought by His creatures. He also provided us with an example of how to live our lives seeking and serving God. |
