All awesome posts, guys! How many times one can say ditto?

Here is something to add.

Doesn't it shock you how a lot of people are openly considering socialism these days? It used to be, (when Americans were somewhat more educated), that just mentioning socialism would cast a dark shadow on a person's ability to think logically.

Not because of socialism being a casted out idea, but because folks around you, having examined the socialist way in detail, have already come to the conclusion that one has to be ignorant of economics, to suppose that socialism can work.

These days, 4 people out of 5 are flirting with socialist ideas, and think that there is possibly something good that can come out of it. Is it not an indication that 4 out of 5 Americans now are not only not educated at all, they also do not have any critical thinking facilities.

Mises said that when the government undertakes by itself and pursues any task, it will invariably end up achieving exactly the opposite of the stated goal. If that is true then the department of education has pretty much accomplished it mission.
One only need to look at health care to see how bad a "freemarket" system has failed. We have the most expensive in the world yet rank near the bottom in terms of care. This country has allways had a mixed economy being capitalism has been regulated. We get in trouble when we charge the Fox's with tending the hen house as is evident by our current mess.

On the contrary, I think we have the best healthcare system in the world. Sure, not everyone is covered, but if I break an arm, i go to the doctor today and get it set tomorrow at latest. Sure, I have to pay my deductible and 20% over that, but you know what? I don't mind at all. I'd rather have the comfort of knowing that if the need is there, I can get it taken care of. Not so in other nations with nationalized healthcare. Here, you are paying for the quality. We have the best medical schools in the world, the best doctors, not to mention some of the best research institutions. That has to be paid for somehow. I have no problem paying my share when I need it.

Sidenote, the fox is the government and big business. We're the hens. you think socialism is rule for the people? Far from it. Socialism will turn into rule by the elite with further disparity from the poor (all of us) and those running the nation (government/business execs). Sure, there's disparity now, but nowhere near what socialism would bring and at least we have the liberties that allow us to move up to the elite.
Our healthcare system is rank "37th" by the World Health Organization...

largely impacted by distribution. We're not entirely a socialist nation, yet.

#1 in responsiveness level according to that same study - that's all I'm worried about.

I keep hearing all this "Socialism" stuff. We're not moving towards a Socialist anything, we've become a soft fascist nation and are moving towards the hard stuff, as the economy and government finish off becoming insolvent.

facism is social, socialism is economical. We're going in both directions. Between the bailouts and the removal of liberties a la Patriot Act, we're doing so quickly.

the kicker is that health care is both a social and economic topic. I personally feel more economic but it is argued in both spectrum.

Dow up nearly 500 on bank plan, rise in home sales- AP
Wall Street got the news it wanted on the economy's biggest problems -- banks and housing -- and celebrated by hurtling the Dow Jones industrials up nearly 500 points. Investors added rocket fuel Monday to a two-week-old advance, cheering the government's plan to help banks remove bad assets from their books and also welcoming a report showing a surprising increase in home sales.

If I was a Wallstreet scumbag, I'd be happy too, knowing Government was going to victimize taxpayers to buy up my worthless crap.

It's alot like someone offering me thousands for my old broken junk at a garage sale.
