i have spent years of my life working with them. i see the joy in their faces win the cross the finish line....even if they are last

And I was expecting something terrible. Geesh anyone could have said that with out meaning harm. Even kids in the special olymics recognize their limitations just as Obama was acknowledging his own. Didn't sound like he was deliberatly trashing the special olympics to me, so I won't assume he was and taunt him for months over it which I expect some will because they lie in wait for this sort of thing to prove something..

Bush said some stuff as well that I didn't think deserved the level of flack he got for it, same here.

i honestly don't think he meant it that way....i think he didn't think before speaking though

bad bowler or not....anyone that has been around special olympics don't think it's funny AT ALL.

it's insulting them. they are very proud of their achievements

Or raising a special needs child. If he came to my home and made that comment, the little prick wouldn't have any teeth left in his mouth.

I hear ya......my jaw dropped when I heard it on the radio. But of course we hear this crap daily and have to brush it off, don't we? Short bus comments, special olympics, window lickers......I've heard it all and it never fails to piss me off.

Or maybe showing his transparency.
Some might call it a Freudian slip. Others might say it's a Jungian precision.

My final thought on it is I think it's just a distraction and really a nonissue. I've worked with special needs kids by the way, so it's not like I'm not sensitive to the issues, but I just don't see it as harmful, I've heard 10 times worse than that on any average stand up comedy routine.

You are correct, this isn't a political issue really. It's more just the same ole' mentality that keeps going round. When you are involved with something like the special olympics (or in my case Miracle League), and you see the effort it takes for some of those kids to even make it to the playing arena, much less play.....and the joy they get out of being able to do something so "normal", it just hurts on a personal level to see the leader of our country making light of it.

I knew there would be plenty of people who found it funny, I just wasn't one of them.

Well, to be fair, I have an abnormal sense of humor. waving

I worked as a attendant care worker for awhile, so I was responsible for taking alot of special needs kids out and teaching them how to operate in social situations, to develope and maintain those normal (who decides what normal is anyway?) activities and skills. It was very rewarding and you know what, I got far more respect from them than other people did because I refused to treat them like they were different from everyone else, I treated them no different than I would my own friends, just with the understanding that they needed to learn a different way of coping with "normal" situations. I learned that alot of them tend to resent being protected from the same treatment that anyone else would receive.

Now, of course, thats dependant on their level of disability and whether or not it's mental, physical or a combination of the 2.

Yea, if we didn't brush it off we sure would be bitter old women. lol

I agree with warmachine, my son seems to touch every heart he comes in contact with. You can just see him light up when he finally learns something new and it 'sticks'. He sure is proud of himself when that happens. We went on a trip to Universal Studios sponsored by the Sunshine Foundation in 2006, and all the "helpers" who came along to help the kids on and off the plane and busses treated the kids like they were "normal" and what an amazing day we had. Everyone was so relaxed and didn't have to worry about the staring, the whispers behind their back and could just let themselves relax and enjoy the day at the park.

I agree, I have been around special needs kids and adults and frankly they don't take things as seriously as we do. Maybe we could learn from that, in not wanting to assume the worst in others.

From Obama's perspective, I believe his remarks were brilliant concerning the special olympics. A welcomed distraction for him not having to talk about appointment failures, economy/legislative gaffs, and diplomatic faux pas'. I know if I were him, I'd much rather have people talking something like this than the other major things I'm screwing up on.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.

noway

Inplying that he qualifies for the Special Olympics??? I guess that is what all the hubbub is about? I did not see it but that is kinda not really relavent and he has the class to apologize in case someone took it wrong. Great guy, I would say.

Absolutely. What would you rather do. Spend a few days apologizing for something that nobody can/will do anything about except express outrage or trying to explain to people you're attempts to seize private assets of private citizens (who have done nothing illegal)... AIG employees.

It was a stupid comment, he apologized.

I am far more concerned with the CBO's estimate of over $1 trillion/year in budget deficits over the next 10 years.

Its appalling.

I don't know that he has the ability to think. Anyone can be endorsed by their followers. I have less education, but it isn't so much the education you are afforded, but the ability to apply it. If you can't be diplomatic...well then your objectivity is questioned, and i am questioning his ability. I also noticed the promptness, within the media, to accredit him, with the recent upswing in the economy. To assert the economy is on a rebound, and give this man the credit, is simply out of reach, in my humble estimation.

I submit, that the down spiral in the economy, was the uncertainty, of the outcome of the election. Moreover, if we give this man credit, for which the prior administration had already made provisions, then we must also provide the negatives. How can we attribute this to someone who cannot communicate to the masses, on an unbiased and positive level?

I do not post in the politics forum very often. I do see a problem. That problem, will not be resolved, until we resolve ourselves...To vote out the long term members of the house and senate, obtain a resolve ourselves, to make a change in this country, and quite frankly, a change that doesn't involve false promise...By a man who cannot, or refuses to answer simple questions. A man who refuses to pledge allegiance, a man who removed the United States flag, from his campaign jet. A man who has yet to prove, without a doubt he is a United States citizen. (even though time was given for those documents to be falsified)

That is my synopsis, of our newly elected President. In short..no i do not believe in him, nor care for him in the slightest degree.

I watched Obama on Leno. I never watch Leno. I never even caught his comment. Guess it didn't occur to me he said something wrong. I did hear it...but I knew what he was saying. Has anyone here never used words that maybe you had wished you hadn't used? Good lord. I still hear the word "retarded used frequently"(and that repulses me to hear) by many that will jump on that one comment.

He did apologize for speaking without thinking.

I do it all the time. Put my foot in my mouth, I mean.

Mark, No offense here but you actually believe all the propaganda crap that is out there about the president? I cannot believe ithuh

We have been proving on these forums for months that all of that propaganda is not true.
