as Mark Twain once said, don't get hung up in the details. The bottom line is do they tell a good story? it doesn't matter if the fictional technology is coherent and it doesn't matter if the fictional geopolitical situation is consistent all that matters is if they tell a good story and keep your attention

People need to realize just how much we owe Star Trek. Captain Kirk was one of the greatest astronauts of all time and him and thanks to him and the crew of the Enterprise we know about all the planets that we read about in the history books today.

The hand that was replaced was a prosthetic, not his robot arm, or am I missing something? I think I should have elaborated. His natural hand got cut off, and the robotic hand is the replacement.
