looks like Obama is gonna lose the support of the Teachers Unions. The Teachers Unions treat the children like they were their own personal entitlement program and will fight tooth and nail any changes Obama wants to make

He promised all this while campaigning. Why would he lose their support now?

I don't see this as a good thing! Actually, it's more like the Education System would/is being used as a "baby sitter" for the parents! biggrin

What part of the principles that he has for the program, make you feel that way?

My biggest issue is the length of time(days, year)! The longer the kids ARE in school, the less time the parents has with their child. JMO

I understand what you are saying. I can't find where it talks about that though. I've only seen the article that I posted on your thread and it's not on there.

I have a child in a private elementary school. School gets out at 3:15. Many children are in the after-school program. Parents pay for them to be babysat while they do their homework and wait for the parents to get off work. Most parents don't get off work at 3:15.

Some of the children are there early - before school starts and are there, also, after school. I feel like that's a long day at school for a child. But..what can working parents do?

I guess what I'm saying here is that many kids are already at the school waiting for their parents.

Maybe this link will explain my issue a little better inside the first paragraph. ie: longer days/year

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29612995/

Oops... I see this sentence in my article too: "and longer days and school years for students." I was concentrating on his quotes and not the editorial part.

Like I said...the private schools have the after-school programs already. Their grades are ahead of the public school i.e. the 4th grade is doing 6th grade work.

My child's school also has a longer year. They go back to school on Aug. 10. The charter school by my house has longer days. They get out at 4:15. They also get out of school in the middle of June and go back the first week of August. I really don't see the problem with the regular public schools doing the same.

It could very well be that I am drawing from my personal up-bringing(know as the old-school). Back when I was in school, it was a well earned "summer vacation" from all the school stuff. I see it(in my mind)as additional time away from being a kid, in the summer time. But, as we know..we all have our own opinions...and as Paul Harvey would say: "now you know the rest of the story"! Have a great day...and enjoy! waving

i don't want to hear the promises; i want to hear exactly how they'll be implemented. define for me "longer year" and "longer days".

tell me how much you plan to reward these teachers with...and what the criteria are. how much for the schools? not a number for ALL of them, but how you intend to split it per district.

i'm okay, personally, with longer years...but what about the families with non-custodial parents who get summer visitation? how will this affect them? i'm NOT okay with longer days. my children are completely exhausted at the end of the school day...it's too much as it is. if anything, it's TOO long...but it has to be so we can freaking work.

TheresMyFriend,

That was my childhood too. There were many children to play with outside and all summer long. Mom was home too.

Now...there's less children to play with. There are hardly any on my street. And...working parents. Many children are left home alone during the summer while the parents work. If the parents have money, they can send them to camps.

Children also need higher degrees to succeed in life then our parents did.

I wish it was the way it used to be too.

I see both sides. flowerforyou

Obama is turning out to be a pretty center-left President and the left-wingers are starting to get frustrated (I've been reading abut a lot of tension between Obama and Pelosi because of that)

But the Teachers Unions dig the status quo. They don't want things like merit pay or testable standards. They always fight charter schools because it takes away funding from them. Teachers Unions only exist to support Teachers Unions not the teachers or the students

Well theresmyfriend, I dunno where you live but in my little hometown of Los Angeles, California, the,(usually foreigners), babysitters have been raising the children,(kids are baby goats), of untold numbers of families,(especially affluent), for years now.

I think many families in Malibu, Ca. will be delighted to hear that in the future they may be receiving expanded "babysitting" services.

i know...i'm one of those that works while the kiddos are in school. i'm able to work full-time without child-care. and yes, that's nice...but any longer and it would be a detriment to my kids and not a help.

If the plan truly teaches children important things needed for the future then I agree with it.

Anything that can help our children provide a good education to set them up later to attend colleges is a good deal indeed.

At the moment we don't have anything outstanding in the system concerning education unless you are willing to pay big bucks for it, which in return I never understood in this nation as I believe all children should get a great education.

What it is worth, we will be watching what will happen in the Obama Presidency hoping that better ideas for education will emerge in the future.

For now "extra hours" are attended at home by big papa.

well, the problem I have with all of this is that it has NOTHING to do with the economy.. nothing. n.o.t.h.i.n.g. it's all liberal entitlement programs designed to make guilty white people feel good about themselves, offering them the illusion that the poor and downtrodden are being helped out and to BUY election votes.

What exactly does education reform have to do with the plummeting DOW?? anything? what does education reform have to do with the housing market (that democrats f'd up by forcing the banks to lower lending standards and exposing the entire market to the risks of subprime mortgages)?? anyting??

no. none of what obama and/or the democrat controlled congress has done since taking office has had any **positive** effect on the economy.. but here all the liberal lap dogs are licking it up telling us all how good the antifreeze tastes.. not knowing they are ingesting poison..

tell me.. what is wrong with the idea that a person should be able to enjoy the fruits of his own labor? what is wrong with being able to lift oneself above mediocrity and make something of himself by the virtue of his being and the ambition in his own heart?

education is something you EARN! not something you stand in line for! Education is it's own reward and cannot be bestowed upon you by the will of the gubment..

Well, I can only give you my perspective. From 1st grade to 5th grade, my son went to a year-round school. Many parents were resistant when the school switched, but were very quickly won over. Teachers, staff, parents, kids, all were quite happy with it and it was incredibly successful. Test scores improved about 20% and the schools in our district with year round schedules have turned into some of the best in the state. Kids are retaining more of the learning, which they lose during the summer months, which means that the teachers have to review less and can more quickly move into new areas. Parents liked it, especially working parents. Yes, it was quite convenient not having to scrounge for daycare for 2 1/2 months out of the year. The kids could've cared less one way or the other, most of them are bored pretty quickly in the summer anyway. The only reason that the school schedule is the way it is, is tradition. Our economy at the time the school system was set up was mostly farming/rural. The schedule was built around when the kids would be needed least at home, in order to maximize the kids who would be able to attend. As our country progressed, the education system didn't. It is now not necessary for that schedule to be in place. Other countries, especially those who are far more educated than we can ever hope to be, having been using a year-round system for a long time. If we ever hope to get our kids up to par, then we need to completely re-think our educational system. This is simply part of it.

In other words, I'm all for it.

I've talked to my neigbors about year round school and parents love the idea for exactly those reasons, and to keep their kids occupied and out of trouble as well. I don't have kids but if I did, I think it's a great idea, it's a shame that kids in other countries are so far ahead of our children when we talk about how great our country is. We have to start acknowledging that we have to change period.

The problem with many parents is that they say they themselves don't have the time they would like to devote to their kids with their own jobs etc, they like the idea of their kids constantly learning and being prapared like that... sounds good to me.

some folks are suspicious of this, but we won't know what works until we try.

Public schools are nothing but a brainwashing camp for children.

Your right, we should demand that they all be forced into christian private schools where they will get brainwashed and indoctrinated the old fashioned way.

It wasn't much of a resume, if you ask me! I said in the beginning, that there will be a day that the saying of: "I told you so" would come to pass. For the record...read my lips: "I did NOT vote for him"! I think it was a big public "brain washing" from the get-go! JMO glasses

Guess the brainwashing from the McCain team just didn't do the trick this time. So much for discussing ideas...
